Have a buddy who's car-shopping. Sadly, he's a "what's the payment gonna be?" type. He was talking about all kinds of cars that were WAAAAAAY out of his price range, sucks at basic math, etc. Look for a small, reliable car with good FE. "MAZDA2!" I exclaim!

Same dealership (Jim Ellis Marietta - AWESOME to deal with) has a 2012, red, auto (good for my buddy) Touring. Sticker is listed at $17k and change.

I told homeboy to try to steal it for $12k. I sent the sales guy I dealt with an email. Sales manager called me back and said they'd be willing to bleed on it, but wouldn't give me a number. No big deal. I understand they want to get my buddy in and push him into the little room.

Anyway, $12k sound about right? I pulled that one outta my ass, but I'm ASSuming the 2014's will be coming out any day...if they're not already out. Maybe start at $10k and walk out at anything over $12k?

12k sounds like a smokin' deal for a new car, with an auto.

I like the way you think.

It's worth a try. Salesman have one job, sell cars. I think you (he) is in a good position to make demands.

Thousands of dollars in variation of what comes out of my pocket based on how well I argue or whether the dealer likes talking to me sounds like a broken system. I'm buying a car, not paying for an argument. Sorry for the tangent/rant. I now return you to people hopefully being useful.

And damn. They've got either $2k cash back (at undisclosed interest rate,) OR $1k back with 0% financing up to 60 mos. I'm guessing this is a good indicator that the 2014's will be out next month. I don't think it'd be unreasonable to start at $10k.

I doubt they'll deal quite that much. I would expect that $13K is about right for that car. I wouldn't start above $12K though and be prepared to walk out the door a few times. Good luck.
I agree with ransom on the haggling part. I berkeleying hate it.

I LOVE the haggling part, assuming the sales guy has a sense of humor, which this dude totally did. We busted each other's balls six ways to sunday. I feel like I got a SCREAMIN deal on the 5, they made money, and we had some laughs along the way. I hammered him so hard about taking me out for dinner with his "big commission check," that he eventually offered, and I declined I felt so bad.

Bonus: He just emailed me and said he'd shoot me $100 if he made the sale.

That's his attempt to get you to sell your buddy on whatever price they push on him.

In reply to poopshovel:

I don't want to begrudge you the fun if that's what it is for you, I just think it's a bullE36 M3 step to have to do.

Dealerships offer no value apart from having test-drive examples on hand, and being a processing center for warranty work and manufacturer-certified service.

Anybody ever learned anything of value about a car by asking a salesperson? "This one has four wheels, and is available in both a light AND a darker blue, which is twice as many shades of blue as brand X..."

If it's not obvious, given that dealerships aren't going away this week, I'm deeply jealous of you for the ability to enjoy the process and probably even do well on the haggling.

They're probably floating that unit on a financing agreement, which means they have been paying finance charges for months, if not over a year now. It puts a unit out the door and gets rid of what is essentially an operating expense now.

Depends on what sales competition they have going on.

Eventually a car like that has a bounty on it.

Last week when I visited my car sales guy at the Mazda dealership (shopping for used trucks,) he pointed out an RX-8 sport with about 65k miles. He said that their dealership network had traded for it at a Hyundai lot. The SM put $18k into it for a trade and it sat at the Hyundai place, then the Buick place. The unit was aged 585 days. He told me to make ANY offer on it.

Make an offer that you'll back up and wait. They may call you shortly before they have to pay interest on it again.

Even with rebates where do you think the $5000 you want off will come from? They are currently going through the auctions with 30,000 miles on them for mid 12s. The Dealer could hammer the card, keep the $2000 rebate and sell it auction for $12,500. In other words, they can sell it Today for a net of $14,500. If they realize this, you will never get it below that number. You just need to find the guy at the dealer that does not realize it.

There's a whole hell of a lot more to it than that, otherwise I wouldn't have purchased my whopping 2 brand new vehicles for waaaaay below invoice. The dealer gets program $$$ from Mazda.

Or...what Tyler H said.

GEE, YA THINK? My integrity is worth a whole lot more than $100. I think it's the right car for my bud. If he can scoop it up for a song, it's a win-win-win.

It does sound like a great deal if they will go for it, has anyone drive. An auto 2? I'm just curious how slow it is. I think it's a traditional 4 spd right?

Yep, its a 4 speed.

I drove an auto 2 before buying my manual just because the manual car required moving several cars to get it out.

Don't get me wrong, the manual 2 isn't exactly a rocket either, but maaaaaannnn was the auto slow.

Then again, since I see more older ladies driving auto 2's, perhaps the target market doesn't mind such things.

I think your 12k number is pretty much right on the money.

If the dealer has 17k into it and hasnt made any money off it any other way, they're fools, but it doesnt make it a 17k car today.

Here's hoping your bud can get the right price. Even a great car is a bad car at the wrong price, imo.

I totally agree that the haggling process sucks, and for me usually involves the sales manager trying to weasel out of the deal I have already negotiated with the sales guy via email.

I did have a different experience this last time however. My sales guy gave me a great quote off the bat. He knew the car inside and out, and showed me all the complicated systems patiently. In contrast the dealers closer to me knew nothing about the car, and lied about the lease terms they were willing to give just to get me into the dealership. Their loss.

Dealer might be betting the long money at this point- dirt cheap car plus two good sales means huge referrals and customers in the long run.

Pretty sure a serious buyer would buy at 12.5 anyway. Keep in mind that nobody gives a E36 M3 about the dealer in this scenario. If they want to sell it to someone who thinks it is worth over 12.5 they are free to KEEP trying, it's been working great so far.
