I recently purchased a 1989 mustang gt project car. The brake light on the spoiler and the license plate lights were not working and after some inspection I have found the issue but don't know how to fix it. I followed the wiring from the rear into the cabin and found out that the wiring has been cut.

There is nothing left that runs to the front of the car, just the wires above the backseat going to the rear. I am not that good with electrical stuff and I didnt want to try and run new wiring all the way to the front of the car to the fuse box etc. I have no idea how to even start on something like that.

Does anyone know of a way to work around this issue? Could there be a way I could splice these wires into the brake lights to get them to work or would I have to run all new wiring? Thanks in advance for any advice.

I would think that you should be able to find the wire that powers the brake light on either side and tap off of that to the CHMSL. Just be sure to get the line from the brake switch, not the signal or marker source.

For the license plate lamp, you can do the same thing, but tap off of the marker light.

I don't know if there's anything specific on that car that would cause a problem, but everything I've dealt with has plenty of capacity to run the extra light, and it all probably went back to the same circuit/fuse originally anyway. Just be sure that when you run the new wires, you don't let them get pinched in the trunk hinges.

FYI, I don't know if this diagram is 100% accurate, but what I have shows that you should need a brown wire for the license plate lamp and a red/light green wire for the stop lamp.
