A BMW 2002 isn't too much over 2,000#. I'm guessing under 2,500# easily. Easy daily driver and fun car.
Obligatory hotlinked picture:
2150# for 1968-1973 - a couple of tweaks and you could be under 2000#. Comfortable, can hang with traffic. Lots of upgrade/engine swaps for uber hoonage. I've DD'd several in the past. Will probably get another soon.

I think the X1/9 (fuel injected) is around 2100lbs. Heavy for it's size, but very fun.
It made a great daily, I miss it alot.
It's difficult to search for 2002's on craig's list...
My 87 civic si is a tick over 2k, but fun, reliable, and has 4 seats and decent storage capacity (compared to the crx.) However, though not as light as the civic (~2,500lbs.,) my 330,000 mile DD 91 Integra is more powerful, more comfortable, gets better fuel economy, and I can fit 10' long sticks of moulding in it with the hatch closed. The RS, though harder to find, was quite a bit lighter than other models.

Agree unless you want to sift through a bunch of ads for 2002 BMW's instead of BMW 2002's.....but I found mine via craigslist.

First gen Celicas are a little heavier than you're thinking, somewhere between 2500 and 2800 depending on year and bodystyle.
... and no lighter than the MkII or MkIII Celica. My '84 ST weighs 2400 lbs.
Plenty of older cars- Opel, Ford Capris, Pintos. Toyota Starlet from the 80s is light.

With that said, what are some cars on the lighter side of 2,000 lbs that would not necessarily make a bad daily driver?
Miata (of course!)
AE86
MKI MR2
First Gen Celica
FB, FC, FD RX7
Mitsubishi Starion ESI-r
in the FWD camp:
CRX
80's Civic...
Help me out here!
I could be wrong, but I think all of those (except the CRX) are over 2000 lbs. -Doug
AE92s like the one in my avatar weigh 2100-2400lbs depending on the model. They're totally DDable and with coilovers they're very good autocross cars. They're good on gas too. Downsides are: FWD, rare, cramped engine bay.

I use craiglook and use the price filter just knocks out all but the cheaper newer bmws but might exclude the top end of the old cars. Also 2002faq.com - seems like a buyers market these days

I think I could DD an Elise if I could clearance the spoiler just enough to clear most speed bumps.
A guy down here DDs an Elise, and the road conditions are awful...and his commute goes through a lot of flood-prone roads too.

If you could find one, a Fiesta is quite light, tho not sure it would make for a good daily driver. Same for a VW Scirocco....there was one on the Memphis CL just 1 or 2 weeks ago.
Slippery slope for sciroccos.
First gen nice and light. under 2k for most early ones
Second gen got up to 2400lbs
And with the extra body kit and other bits the 16V cars were in the 2600lb range.
Hu? My '88 Scirocco 16v is just north of 2300. Thats mostly stock, not stripping anything out.

There's one for sale just down the road from me. It looks like a barn find, and is missing all the exterior trim and much of the interior. It has just a little rust, and minilite wheels. It actually looks like that cream colored one above except neglected for 20 or so years. I haven't called the guy because I imagine he wants a relative fortune for it, but maybe one of these days...
A trick when searching for bmw 02's is to search for "bmw 1600." Many people selling classic Bmw 2002 will put the 1600 reference in there.

My classic Mini is 1450. I couldn't believe it when I first put it on the scales. And with the new brake and wheel combo, it's lighter now. But I don't drive it daily. I don't drive any one car daily.

Saturn SC/SL2's are around 2,450 stock...
modern, safe, cheap, fairly good aftermarket support, etc

TVR 2500M's are right around 2k, and the Vixen is under 2k. Not sure how good of a dd it would be, but it would be as good better than a Spitfire.
This is the type of stuff I had no idea about. Beautiful cars but this is the only car I could find within 250miles in orlando... http://orlando.craigslist.org/cto/1908208615.html
I'm just trying to brainstorm a featherweight chassis with usable interior space and hopefully an enjoyable motor inside. Most the cars I've really enjoyed have been well over 2,500lbs. I really enjoyed the MKI MR2 so I'm looking hard at the corollas now with the same motor and a more usable hatch with a backseat to boot sounds like the best case scenario.
Toyota Echo.
We had a 2001 that weighed in around 2100lbs. Ours was a 4 door auto, apparently the manual transmission was 70 or so lbs lighter but I think the 2 door weighed about the same. Ours had A/C too, and that was optional. Every thing else was manual (windows locks etc)
There is allot of hate for that car out there but it was a featherweight. 40+ mpg's daily... Did not die gracefully in an "accident" when ours got rear-ended.
I want another, or a geo, or a festiva or a justy.

Suzuki Swift.
Get a GT if you want to have fun.

I was going to mention it, but you didn't get them. When we first got the Hatch version, I test thrashed one. It wasn't horrible, and I looked it up, it was just about 2000 lbs. Toyota claims 2300 lbs for the Yaris hatch
EDIT: just looked it up. 1920 lbs for the Echo hatch.
Smaller 1.1L Opel Kadett is 1700#, 1.9L version right shy of 2k#. Opel GT or Manta closer to 2400#. Manta makes up for the bit more weight with awesome handling though.
