I was talking to a guy the other day who said his friend was into 'mad max' type cars.
Not replicas of the cars in the movies, apparently, but crazies who build cars that might appear in the movies. (No I don't need pics of your local CL junk)
Though it sounded interesting and was sure there would be an internet full of these people, but I haven't turned up anything in 10 minutes of searching
I thus turn to the experts of automotive subcultures.
Any leads?
There is a theme camp at Burning Man every year that lives as though they are a tribe in the post-apocalyptic Mad Max world.
They are called Death Guild and they have some great cars and a thunderdome! Here is what I googled: linky

Ooo, that one was incredible, it really looked like it was floating like the Land Speeder from Star Wars.
They're called ratrods and deserve a horrible death.
Falcon XBs with Monza front ends, blowers, and zoomies, however...
this was our theme on the civic for the $2008 challenge. Not exactly what it should be like but it was based off the bat car (Ford xA?)

This car and the grill guard specifically (From the 1st link above) is what I had in my mind.
The friend of the guy I was talking to is? going to have a dualie rear end under one of the 70's bloated musclecars, in addition to the scary looking metal welded on.
I think there could be a great middle ground for a street car, esp. a low budget one.

A modern take on the style and one of my favorites
the busted front lip and sextuple 6 license plate are the icing on the cake. The fabbed-on c-pillars also help distract from the stock shape.
Why do all of those Burning Man cars have chains from the rear of the roof to uprights from the rear bumper?

You could always import an Australian muscle car. For over 25 years old, there shouldn't be major problems.
