The Challenge Miata has developed a drip, right from the area behind the crankshaft pulley. I'm assuming I'm looking at a water pump and timing belt while I'm at it. Unless there's something else that could cause this that I'm unaware of. Confirm/correct my diagnosis, please.

That's what it was every time I've seen that. And yes, good idea to replace timing belt while it is off to replace water pump.

The neck that bolts to the block has a gasket there. Could it be bad?

In reply to Dusterbd13 :

It could be. I'll start dismantling things as if the pump is bad and stop if something else becomes apparent.

That was the cause of the coolant leak on my Miata. There's a good chance that is what DeadSkunk will find.

Miata is the easiest car I've ever changed the TB on.  I'd do it all if it's due to TB or unknown age/mileage.

Good opportunity to inspect the crank keyway, too.

I ordered the parts to do it anyway. I bought the car with 115k on it and have no idea if the timing belt is original or not , so may as well do it all while it's apart.

Even if the timing belt isn't original, it's due at 120k so you're not far off a scheduled change. And a lot of people skip the water pump at 60k.
