Oh crap, I'm older than I thought.
Someone in lemons/champcar transplanted the 2.4 Cobalt engine, there easy to find and cheap. 160-170HP isn't bad either.

The Ecotec swap is pretty good. Maybe with an aftermarket tuner it would be a better feel but the factory set rev limiter is only around 6,400. When mated to a usual miata transmission meant it absolutely stopped pulling in second at 50 mph. As an autocross car this was undesirable and meant shifting into 3rd a lot. Also, stiff motor mounts and a balance shaft delete make it feel like a paint shaker to drive.
I didn't love mine very much and sold it to a guy who wanted a track rat pretty quick.
