Quick, what's the going price on a used OEM Miata hardtop?
Also, what are the chances that Spec Miata changes the rules any time soon about requiring OEM tops (or no top at all)?
I'm thinking about going to look at a top this afternoon/evening:
- M-edition merlot mica paint
- defrost rear window
- headliner
- latches included
- apparently for an '04 (so I might need some different strikers for my '90)
- supposedly in excellent condition
What's this worth? (I only paid $740 for my whole car, so I'm not super thrilled about shelling out lots of cash for a top unless it's a pretty good deal)
Thanks!

If you were selling, and near me, I would have said, Oh, bout 100 bucks...
but since you are buying, I will be honest: a good condition top, will go for 800-900 around here.
Depending on how nice the top is, a grand isn't out of the question either.
Ok, that's about what I've been seeing around here regularly. Anyone want to venture a guess about what the prices are going to do over the next few years? Is spec Miata going to keep driving up the prices, or are they about flat and likely to stay that way?
Out here, they seem to go for closer to $1500. That could have something to do with Thunderhill, Sears Point, and Laguna Seca all being within 3 hours, though.
I've seen the prices rise a touch in the last 2 years, so i'd expect that trend to continue.
Basically i just need to find 2 and never sell them.

a good friend of mine once said. "Miata hardtops are not bought.. they are rented for free with a 800-1000 dollar security deposit."
In reply to SCARR:
Haha, yeah - that's kinda what I'm thinking.

Thats one for the magazine!
Sounds like some one should make up a mold and fab some up. Get the weight correct to match OE and sell them for $500 each.
Doesn't spec Miata require OEM tops, though?

In reply to Tom Suddard:
Surely at some point they'll have to address the hen's-teeth aspect as the OEM hardtop becomes a substantial % of the total cost of the car?
Does it actually have to be OEM, or does it just have to be a stock replacement? I mean, you don't have to buy Genuine Mazda fenders for your Spec Miata, do you?
Do you?
I actually don't know...
I've always heard a thousand...but I've never heard of anyone buying one for that much. Every time I hear anything about a miata hardtop, it goes something like "I bought the car for $900. The TOP is worth more than that!"
Speak of the devil:

There's aftermarket tops out there.
None legal for Spec Miata, though.

This is exactly why I wanted to hear some other opinions. Seems like people are always asking ~$1000, but I don't know if they actually sell for that much or how often much better deals show up.
The problem is that people who are selling the hardtops separately usually have an idea of what they're worth. People ARE selling nice hardtops for $900-$1100. More if it's already paint matched in a less common color.
The last hardtop i saw in the color i'd need to match my MSM sold for $1250, seller was asking $1500.
This is why i decided to just look for a black one.
What you describe would go for about $1200 around the San Francisco Bay area.

I have about $950 into my color matched 10AE hardtop. $750 for the hardtop, and $300 for paint, but the guy also painted and repaired the apparently unobtanium lip for it as well.
I bet I could sell it within 2 weeks for the same or more if I tried.
A friend of mine recently picked this car up for $600. Once we start cutting it up for a challenge build, the hard top will be for sale.

I have bought many high mileage Miata just to get to the hardtop. Sell the hardtop in Fla(evidently no one in Fla ever bought a hardtop) to a Spec Miata racer and then part out the whole car. Double or triple your money every time.
