Ok, I am stumped on this one. I am trying to help a friend with his Miata which after about 15mph, there is a whine coming from the rear. The rear diff has just been replaced, so we know that isn't the issue. I thought maybe wheel bearing, but turning doesn't really seem to make a difference. I'm stumped, any thoughts?

No gear lube in rear. Pretty soon whine becomes a crunch.

My open 1.6 diff whined, even with new redline lubricants :(). A Torsen swap fixed that problem.

Diff has fluid, and we swapped the rear diff and the noise stayed the same

See if you can find a set of Chassis Ears. Clip-on microphones. Array them around in various suspected trouble spots and flip between the audio feeds from each one. The loud one is yer kulprit.

I'm going to say wheel bearing though. There's not much else spinning back there.

Maybe something rubbing the drive shaft?
