Considering getting back into SCCA AX, found a neat car but I am a little concerned about the class and rating. 87 MR2 with a non stock engine and trans. Specifically a 20 valve motor and 6 speed with limited slip. Also full coil over suspension. I know it would be a blast to drive but with these mods could be classed/rated at a disadvantage. I am not into it for trophies only but would like to be competitive wherever I am grouped.

Without knowing more about the car, and assuming the engine was made by Toyota, I'm inclined to believe it would fall into SSM. At a minimum, you're going to want the 275 wide 15" A6's to have a shot in that class. To really have a shot I'd bet you'll want more power and aero.
That said, it's a big rulebook and there's a lot of unknowns about the car to make a definitive claim.
Yeah, motor swaps are tough on your classing. Either you're gonna be in SSM which means full racing package Hoosiers, forced induction, aero, and more. Or step out of the PAX rat race and compete in your local catch all class. We call it RTU (road tire unlimited) and give it a PAX of 1 but it allows most anything on wheels to compete and since people sometimes just enjoy modding their cars without regard to the rule book it's one of the better attended classes.
As long as the 20 valve engine is a Toyota product, you should be all set.
"Engine must be from the same manufacturer as the body (Toyota/Lexus, Nissan/Datsun, Honda/Acura, etc.) Badges that exist as marketing aliases for the manufacturer (Honda/Acura, Toyota/Lexus, Nissan/Datsun) will be recognized as equivalents. Swaps involving makes related only at corporate level (e.g. Ford/Volvo, Renault/Nissan, Chrysler/Mercedes) are not recognized as equivalents."
In their own words the SCCA seems to be pretty inclusive in this class hoping that a broad range of cars excluded from other classes with find a home there.

99% chance you'll be in SSM. You'd have to have some crazy mods are stripped out to have to move to a modified class.
National Level, yes, you'll need boost and aero. I competed and won a regional championship with a naturally aspirated SOHC in a 240sx in SM. Just depends on what your region has for competition.
