quip aside, I would say original mini if I understand the question correctly. You said fun. nimble little hatches are about as much fun as one can have.

Thread is too hard. Too many good options. Fun to think about, in any case. Until your brain starts to hurt from all the good options.
Lotus Elan.

S2 Exige S or S1100RR.
Atom with wings is another possibility, like Sevens they need downforce, but downforce makes Sevens look silly.
I've read a lot of great options so far, and honestly I think for pure fun it'd be hard to beat something like a sportbike-powered special, a seven, or a nice roadster. That said, I have to mention the venerable BMW 2002. They're awesome!

For me, based on my own experience, a Miata.
Hate to admit it, but it beats my Spitfire. Spitfire sits a whole lot more now that I've got a Miata. I'm even considering the notion of selling it.

Communist! I must admit, it is nice to just get in a car, start it and just drive away.
I once read an article by an automotive writer whose name I cannot remember that a 100hp Spitfire was the most fun car he ever drove. It would be nice to try one.

When it works right, anyway.
I'd go Elise, or maybe Esprit...when it runs right. But if cost were a consideration, I'm going MK1 MR2 or...
I poke around looking at these all the time. I think? I could fix that for cheap! "If" it would run without alot of maintenance $$$ I think they would be a hootus of blown 16v fun. (I do see them cheaper than $4,500 also).

That all by itself wouldn't do it for me. A Camry for example just doesn't satisfy.
But the Miata handles great, sips gas, is perky, a/c and a flop-top, etc etc etc. Sure there are cars that can out handle it, or out accelerate it, are more comfortable, whatever. But as a whole complete package, the Miata is remarkable for a sports car person like myself.

I drove a Cologne V6 powered Spitfire once. It was a blast. There were a number of problems with it but I had fun.
