I have no useful answers to your questions. But I wanted to add that This...Sounds...AWESOME!
Too nose heavy esp for a "track car"
it would be badass , but I don't think you would get what you thought out of it.
Isn't the V8 actually lighter than the I6?
Maybe I'm thinking of another car. Either way, this needs to happen.

It probably is lighter than an iron I-6, but I thought the 2002 only came with a four. The guy that runs the shop where I get my Bimmer parts is finishing up a wicked 2002. Fiberglass panels, a built S14 pushing out at least 300 hp, coilovers all around. Can't wait to see it on the track.
Kit? No.
But the BMW V8s are heavy, big, not tuner friendly compared to an LS1. IF I were going to swap a V8 into a 2002 it'd be an LS1.
But for really nice track awesomeness, I'd swap a built S14 into the car. Or maybe a turbo'd M20/M42.
bmw engine model #s, weights and power
The weights listed seem light (bare block???) but gives you a comparison (m20 is listed as 16# heavier than s14, m60 is 87 lbs heavier than s14...maybe same weight as m30??). I like the thought of the s14, but for all out thrashing without cubic $$$ to throw at it, I think I'd lean towards a boosted m20.
I love the sound of a straight six. Try and find an S50 or something. Heavy, sure, but powerful right out of the box and not as expensive. And the sound.
Those weights listed for the BMW V8's can't be right.
the LS1 in the back of our corvair was 408Lb with JBA headers , no AC compressor or PS pump... It's 1" shorter then the 215 Olds V8 it replaced which tipped the scales @ 330 LB.
Conversley the Northstar I put in my fiero was pushing 500 Lb , all those new fangeled cams and BS add a lot of weight.

I'm inclined to agree. The Lexus aluminum block DOHC 4.0 V8 is about 400 lbs, and I really don't see the dimensionally larger BMW M62 that's in my 740iL being lighter. And while I know the BMW M70 V12 is pretty light (I've seen it succesfully used in a number of kit cars with no real weight penalty), there's no WAY it's under 400lbs.

I don't think those weights are right, or they didn't list on what basis... it does give some relation to weights though m10 vs m20 vs ....
