I wasn't sure where to put this. But I watched a Youtube video about Mulholland Drive and it had a link to this

Great stories. Lots of things that just don't happen in this day and age.
History of Mulholland Drvie
Ha. I watched a video about Mulholland Drive the other day, too.
And yeah, lots of super cool stories.

That took me almost a week to read. Disappointed at how it tailed off toward the end, or at least where I finally gave up around the Targa to coupe stuff.
I've been lurking on the Pelican thread for years. Since I lived near Mulholland and played there some, watched the races (cars and submarines) so it is interesting. My SCCA race school instructor was part of the CRA. I went to high school with a couple of them including Banning but didn't know him well.
My college roommate, who lived in Glendale back in the day, used to race on Mulholland. He got busted by the LA County Sheriff's helicopter. They put a light on him and told him to pull it over on the loudspeaker. He did. Soon the ground unit caught up. How are you going to outrun a helicopter? They arrested him and confiscated his Camaro. His dad bailed them both out and made him sell the car. He also said there was a guy there who drove a street legal Lola T-70. He won a lot of money from guys in Ferraris and Lamborghinis. There was an article about it in New West Magazine, also back in the day.

Cool links, thanks. Mulholland has a bit of a negative connotation for me, because it was the first place that I experienced the phenomenon of "My cool vintage car cannot keep up with a motivated housewife in a minivan".

I did watch, and enjoyed, the "King of the Mountain" movie. Yeah, sure the story was weak but who cared, it was more about the cars for me. Watching the Youtube video it got me going again about how much things do change over time. I kind of wish I was around during those day, and closer to California and not here in Ontario. That said, no matter where everyone grows up, there are stories and roads we remember.

That movie is total crap...............and that's why it's fun to watch.
Best thing about the movie, Dennis Hopper going crazy. "Time is speed! Speed is time!".
Worst thing about the movie. The fake 356. They needed a real Porsche.
I loved that movie as a kid, Hopper was a total nutter and the Porsche was still cool even if fake. Today they would call it an outlaw and charge more than a Singer.
We saw the Mulholland Porsche during a visit to the Petersen this summer. Interesting car!

It was supposed to be there on display, the Mulholland RSR. The owner Branning (SP??) wasn't even sure that car would run as it had sat for so long.
I came to this thread because I thought ya'll were talking about the David Lynch movie.
Mulholland Drive (2001) - IMDb
Many, many years ago, I spent a good part of a day going up and back on Mulholland Drive in a then-new MR2 Turbo.

If you got to page 377 or so you will see (Chris) Bannig did get it to the Peterson.

LSWolvesf;
I am slowly going through the Pelican Forum thread. I think I am at page 20 or so. I ready through a couple pages here and there when work is slowing down.
Chris Banning wrote a book about that called "The Mulholland Experience". I have one copy. If you can get your hands on one, I recommend it. The writing isn't top notch, but the stories told in the book are 100% worth it. In the first part, Banning explains the history of the road and of the guy it is named after. It is quite interesting. The main part of the book is a recollection of stories about the racing going on this road in the 60's, 70's and 80's by some of the guys who lived it. I tell you, for a younger guy like me who lived his late teens-early twenties in the late 00's-early 10's when a much bigger emphasis on safety was put on driving, all the stories in this book are downright nuts! Banning explains he went to the Porsche HQ in Germany where he somehow managed to get advice and blueprints to setup his chopped-roof 911. He also says something like that he didn't bother putting seatbelts in the car because he believed that if he crashed it, he would've died anyways. The other guys have good stories too. Maybe some aspects are exaggerated, but we'll never know...

I just found that link tonight and was going to post it here. Good find Preach.
Don't forget Mulholland Highway (The Snake) which has been closed since the fires a few years ago. It's where the famous Rock Store hangout is. It connects to Mulholland Drive via Dirt Mulholland which isn't open to motorized vehicles.
Unrelated...but somewhat related...
You're missing the real story on Mulholland Drive...William Mulholland. [nerd alert] William Mulholland was the public works director who build the aqueducts that allowed LA to "steal" its water from Inyo County farmers...via LA Mayor Fred Eaton. Fred Eaton boght up land & water rights privately saying he was retiring. He did move to a ranch on the river, but he sold the rest to the city of LA.
