The 12 valve 3.0 is a great motor. I had a 94 Montero with a 3.0 for a while. Not powerful but totally adequate for pretty much anything but heavy towing. Not that you're planning this but they take to boost well. I have a buddy in WA state who did 500whp with one. I've had a few in dodges too. I have a 97 3000gt and a slightly older stealth with 12v 3.0/5spds that will hopefully eventually be combined into one good car and turboed.
Our 12 valve 3.0 litre coming out for replacement in our 91 LWB Montero.
Driving north from Columbus (Ohio) today, I saw a 4x4 Delica! He was driving about 55mph in the right hand lane and it had temp tags. It also had the URL for a Delica owner's forum on it
.
I had no idea how utterly huge these things were until I saw it. It looked like a Vanagon on stilts. (It may have been lifted)
I punched my passenger window hard as I tried to give a thumb's up as I drove by.
I was looking for this thread yesterday. Saw this guy in Atlanta traffic on the way back from the challenge.

Is it a 4d56? I drove a mighty max with one once and it seemed pretty ok. I'd really like to put one in my Montero, based on that experience.
I love my 87 Montero but i feel like if i had the Delica first i wouldn't have had much interest in the Montero. If you're looking at newer ones that's a bit of a different ballgame because they have good v6s with a crapload of power potential. Some 1st gens had a V6 but i kinda see a 1st gen as being substantially less cool than a Delica unless it's modified to make it cooler.
My 2.6/5spd gas montero is pretty ok to drive on the highway. Still slow, but i've had to 100 mph for some reason so it's not like it's barely capable of being on the highway. I plan to turbo mine mostly for reasons of it not becoming a E36 M3ty drive at altitude if i were to take it to a state with mountains. A 1st gen 3.0/5spd would already be fine.
Curious how you were planning on going about the 2.6L turbo route? I've heard a few brave souls attempting a blow-through setup retaining a weber carb but that seems like a lot of room for error with any substantial amount of boost. I've always wondered if it would be an easy swap with the Starion equivalent G54b turbo components (intake/TB, ex. manifold and turbo, ECU and harness).
Local euro guy keeps 3 in driveway always
registered too... which is no small feat here
I'm contemplating selling the Delica. Should I?

Not now, I just took out a loan for my kitchen.
Just realized yesterday was the 6 year anniversary of my trip to Toronto for the Delica. Still going strong.
6 years, wow! Still one of the coolest little 4x4 rigs I have ever seen with my own two eyes.
7 Year anniversary. Replaced the battery yesterday. Still going strong. Contemplating whether or not to sell it. Still love it, but it is not used as much as it used to be.
7 years later, I still love your weird van.

Congrats on another year! Hope you have many more happy years with it.
Last month I was in NYC and saw Wally. Later that day, near the World Trade Center I was slow to get out the camera but came upon this Delica.
