LeMans blue over caramel extended leather with the wood pack, Dinan exhaust and ECU and short shifter and strut brace, post-facelift headlights and steering wheel and nav screen, VANOS already done, came with pretty much every receipt back to 2006.
What a car, and what a driving experience.
That could be my old car. Mind sharing the last 7 of the VIN?

I don't know the last 7 of the vin off the top of my head, but this one's a 2000 so I guess that probably answers your question.
So relevant to my searches. Seeing these going for low dollars in driver shape. What did nice o e like that to for?

Market value is a little screwy in Canada just because we didn't get many of them. My friend picked this super clean one up for $21k CAD.
I’m pretty sure one of these will be our next “fun car” when the 964 is gone ( someday) What’s it like to drive? We have an e39 530i and the build quality is fantastic. I can only imagine how nice an m5 would be.
I got lucky just the other day. Nothing to do with cars however....
That's a clean car for sure. But I was underwhelmed with my E39 driving experience.

I'd be interested to hear more about why. Having read a fair bit about them and owning one for ten years, your reaction is anomalous with what seems to be the conventional wisdom, as well as my own experience.

I’ve found there to be a considerable difference between the M5 and other E39s. There’s the engine, obviously. But the M5 comes across as a car where the engineers didn’t have to answer to the accountants, and it’s got better steering, better interior, better brakes, better suspension. I got to spend a considerable amount of time with a 540i Sport 6-speed and it just didn’t have the magic.
They do take a lot of maintenance, though. There are some bushings in the front suspension that need frequent changing and keeping that engine happy is more than just an occasional oil change. Think of it as a four door super car from a maintenance standpoint and you’ll be good.

That is, without doubt, one of the best-looking sedans ever produced. Timeless, understatedly handsome, competent and athletic looking. No extra crap tacked on to make it "exciting". Just perfect.
I've thought about them. It appears that maintaining it would be 2x my 996.

Not mine (my car was a 2003) but very close. Stunning color combo!
Have your friend seriously consider a Dinan exhaust. That was the only mid my car had and the sound was awesome!

Seems like he has that Dinan exhaust already covered. Beautiful car.

.
didn't the V8 cars use a different steering mechanism. A worm and roller box as opposed to the rack and pinion the I6s got?

I drove a pretty well maintained example of a 540 sport with a manual. The big thing that stood out was the steering was terrible. No feel and slow. It felt heavy and while the power was adequate the car just wasn't inspiring to drive. It could be my expectations were too high. But I was disappointed.

Apparently, but both the 540 and the M5 are V8s.
m5's steering box is quicker, and they got servotronic variable Power Steering assist
I'll always love the E39, even more than my E61.

I'm starting to see really nice examples in similiar condition here for 15-18k USD so that makes sense, looks like he got a good buy. Maybe its a bit pricey but it seems with the services done and condition that it was worthwhile.
