Manufacturers were performing Oil Consumption tests and telling customers 1 quart per 500 miles is normal back in the 60s/70s when I worked in dealerships. Personally, I have never experienced this type of oil consumption on any of many cars I have had as daily drivers, including muscle and performance cars.
