So I'm looking at this Zpost forum, and people are running all kinds of offsets. Does it really matter, besides fitment? I'm not interested in any kind of camber; I don't race often enough for that.
and maybe this should just be posted there

These are 17" Soft 8s. I don't remember what the offsets and widths are. They're different front and rear. They are heavy but inexpensive and they balance without issue.
Do you have a way to find out the offset and width without too much difficulty? That looks like about the least shallow I could go and make it look good so I want to see what my options are to make this look happen (assuming that offset isn't a hard and fast rule)

Wouldn't banded steel wheels be a good alternative to the Nascar type wheels?
Something like these:

The summit racing site has a really nice selection despite not having a visualizer. The only negative is they are all very heavy.

okay don't laugh too much. I got into MS Paintoshop and did it up how I'm thinking. I went ahead and added the shark mouth too that I ultimately hope to have on someday :P

Points for eating small children...
As far as the offset question, look up scrub radius. Not super critical, but it can affect steering feel and general dynamics.

Yes, I just need to look in the file. I don't have time today but I should tomorrow. If I don't post tomorrow feel free to PM me a reminder. I won't be offended.
U.S. wheel may have a 17x8 D-window in 5x4.75" bolt circle still. They are available in 4.5" backspacing, and may be available in 4" backspacing. The 17x9 D-window has been discontinued in 5x4.75".
I have Bassett Inertia's on my Avenger but they do have a different lug nut taper. They also recommend using the large lug nut that take a one inch socket. This is in the Speedway Motors catalog and in the info from Bassett.
What's The Angle
Most racing wheels have a 45° seat for the lug nut to seat in while most street wheels use 60°. By using 45° the lug nut is able to clamp tighter over a larger area, which helps keep your wheels on the car where they belong.
If you mix and match street and race wheels or lug nuts you are just asking for trouble. All our lug nuts are 45° and designed to be used with racing wheels.
I have seen guys try this and have wheels come loose.

The fronts are 17x8 with a 4 1/2" back spacing. The rears are 17 x 9 with a 5" back spacing. The bolt pattern in 5 x 4.75"
Also, I have two sets of wheels. One are Soft 8's and the other are Black Rock Type 8 Series 997's. While I'm sure there are visual differences between the two brands they're pretty subtle and I couldn't tell you which are on the car in that picture. In fact both brands could be on the car. I make no effort to keep them in matched sets. They all ballance without issue.

I always ask about lug nuts when changing wheels. Too much chance of being dangerously wrong over a few bucks.

Yeah, if you have a wheel come off at speed you can experience this...

YEEEEARS ago I had an '80 Camaro and my friend gave me a set of Cragar SS rims. They had like oversized universal lug holes and I didn't know that was a thing. HAPPILY I was only on a 35 mph road when one of the rims slipped the nuts and the wobble gave it away just before I lost the wheel.
We were at the crest of a hill on a busy 2 lane road. I don't remember where the jack came from but we got it jacked up and the lugs put back on for a slow, careful drive home. I'll never forget the wheel was all cockeyed on maybe one or two studs and a police officer asking if we could just push it off to the side of the road and me - a 17 year old kid - looking up increduously at him.
As others have mentioned, I'm not sure if lug centric wheels are going to have viable lug stud options for a BMW. You may also want to invest in proper studs and lug nuts for this application as well.
We tried running basset steel wheels on our champcar and getting the wheels to not shake like crazy was a pain in the butt. They looked cool though.
I can't wait to see either.

Oh man - I forgot that BMWs are hub centric.
DirtyBird, do you have the specs on those wheels? It's looking like the most I can get away with is ET35 without messing with things too much -- that's not much!

I saw this one for sale. They have the whiteletter thing and taller sidewalls but after doing some research it looks like I can only get a "depth" to the wheels of about an inch, and that's just not going to cut it, IMO. It looks like APEowner's wheels have at least like 4 to 6 inches of cupping. I hope someone else can come and rescue this because I'm fresh out of ideas.
