The good deals are still out there. I stopped by and knocked and left like 3x notes on the door of a house with an M6 that was slowly rotting in the yard. There were already 2 other business cards, both 'cash for your junk car' places. I wrote, "Hey, I love old bimmers and I'm interested in your M6. I know what it is worth and won't waste your time. Even if you're not interested in selling, I'd be interested in hearing about it." I also put my email address in case they don't want to call. No response. Same thing with an E28 M5. No response. Same thing with an MR2. No response.
Mike and Frank don't just drop the Antique Archaeology pamphlet in the mailbox. Despite it being annoying, you really need to interrupt them..if they were the self-starting types, they probably wouldn't have a cool car just rotting away.
I used to buy cars that were sitting around quite a bit. I have tried the note on the car or door with no success. Catching them outside is difficult unless you know their schedule. I would just go to the door and knock. Just like sales, you will not always be successful, but you will always wonder if you don't try. The garage door is open and it's not against the law to look in as you drive by. Knock, knock
I got home from work way too late tonight so everything was closed up. I prefer to wait until I see someone outside. I've never seen the husband but the wife is out primping the yard every now and then.
I do know someone in the area that knows everyone in the community. I will see them on Saturday and ask.
I once noticed the nose of a Mini in a garage. I knocked on the door, and talked to "Larry" about it. He'd had it for several years, and it had been sitting in the garage as a storage bin for quite some time, now. I wasn't interested in buying it, just wanted to talk to another Mini owner, exchange contact info, etc.
My visit must have sparked something, because a couple months later, Larry stopped by my house, in his Mini. I had also seen him at the British Car shows a couple times.
A few years later, Larry called, asking if I would be interested in buying it. Unfortunately, I wasn't in the position to.
I say, go for it. Knock on the door. It might not be today, but maybe in a few years, the guy will sell it to you.

I've had good luck talking to the wife first. Sometimes they provide that extra motivation for the husband to sell.

Yes. It never hurts to have someone on your side.
