I'd report him to CL. As much as we rag on CL they take a dim view of such shenanigans. CL scam info If you had followed through with payment that could well have been be considered wire fraud on his part.
Keep in mind you have civil fraud claim and a criminal fraud claim as separate avenues to recover damages. While it may not be worth your time to pursue, it can't hurt to look into it while you are there. Once you didn't agree to pay the deposit, you'd think he would have come up with some excuse, like it just sold, to keep you from showing up. What did he think was going to happen?
It's going to become our collective effort now to get you into a CTS-V. Give us your criteria and put the hive to work!
I bought my MX5 online from a dealer in Tenn. Paid them, and they shipped the car to my driveway. No surprises, no issues, car was exactly as described. I had no fear in the transaction, the carfax showed the 3 owner history and it all worked out. Scary to think that what appears online to be an actual dealer can all be fake.... hope there is some legal recourse as people like this need to be shutdown.

Exactly my thoughts. I was waiting all day to call him at close of business as I expectedhe would pull the plug and prevent issues. Apparently that was not a concern of his. I do have Batan Rouge Better Business Bureau and Police Fraud Reports filed.
I have his home address and almost went to pay him a visit. I thought better of visiting a con artist at his home unarmed from out of town and hit the airport bar instead.
Ask for a Gnarly Barley Korova Milk Porter if they have it. You might as well get something good out of your visit.
I wonder if a local station's investigative journalist would care, like WAFB or something. I'm sure a lot of their viewers are going to be shopping for a car in the next few months.

I hope you find a good one and are able to stick the man on this E36 M3ty scam artist, best of luck
Come on up here to Boston. We are not flooded. In fact we are having one of the worst dry spells in 20 years.
Find one in Houston. I'll go check it out myself, pick you up from the airport in the V Wagon and put you up for the night in the Grosh. We can turn this into 556hp lemonade.
My faith in used car dealerships stay the same. that sucks. Sorry to hear I was right. (That feels weird to say) was hoping you'd have pics of a ctsv on this page.
this sucks. That jerk ruined my night, too, as I was looking forward to living vicariously through your adventure.
What exactly happened when you showed up???

All appreciate all the kind comments. Gonna lick my wounds for a second and get back to the hunt.
Basic criteria are: Fun Daily ~400hp+ Rwd or potentially Awd Sedan with actual backseat Moderately Luxo barge
Current hunts in progress Gen 1 Caddy CTS V Sedan (long in the tooth, buyable at ~9k with ~70k miles) Gen 2 Caddy CTS V Sedan (yummy but would buy 50k and sell by 100k miles) Lexus ISF (not quite as nasty but bulletproof) Jag XJR 03-09 Sedan (scares me but swanky buys ~10k)
The only thing I found locally that fits your criteria is this.

Looks pretty clean.
High miles but 06 Cadillac CTS-V $11.5k 135k miles
Another high mileage 05 168k $11.5k
84k 6spd $18750 07
Not sure what your price range is, but have you considered an SS? 415 hp, RWD, large 4 door, still fairly new, and a nice interior. More like a business casual interior as opposed to formal wear. Just as example of pricing, CarMax has quite a few under $40k.
Plus, you can get it as 6-speed.....

In reply to rob_lewis: I did consider it but have not yet driven it. I love the idea of the SS but wasn't sure I loved the looks. I saw one last week in Detroit lowered that changed my mind. When I started the hunt I had set myself a target of up to $15k. As scope creep (hp increase) occurred I have crept up to $30k but still targeting lower.
Man, that blows. If you need eyes in DFW, hit me up. I've got a few friends with CTS-Vs, they're worth the hassle to acquire. One of them flew to Oregon to get it.
E63 AMG? Here's one with asking price under $30. Big back seat, and over 500hp.
