Here's the delima:

Friend just bought a 1992 E36, M50, non Vanos, no EWS (immobilizer). Has been sitting for a couple years. It turns over, but has no spark and no fuel. First thing that came to my head was a Crank Position Sensor. Toss one in, no dice. Next attempt is no fuel pump priming. Toss a new pump in as well as getting the 4 year old gas out and replacing with a couple gallons of fresh, same result; no go. Tried swapping out DME relays and Fuel Pump relays with known good ones, no change. Last, I pull the ECU out, notice some corrosion on the top row of pins. Tell my buddy to buy another matching ECU. Won't see that for another week or so.

Is there something we're missing? I would think this is the most easiest to get running as there's not much intervention other than a couple places to check, that we've checked. When I jumped the pins to the fuel pump, i could physically see fuel puking past the seals on top of the injector rail, but once I pulled them out of the intake manifold, they're bone dry at the tips. I would think the CPS triggers the ECU to tell the fuel pump to send that beautiful fuel to those nipples. I checked resistance on both new and old CPS, both within range of normal readings.

Condensed version: no spark, no fuel, crusty ECU, power to the ECU is good, power to the relays is good, has fuel to the rail, there's no immobilizer, 12 volts of fresh battery, good grounds..

What to check next?

Stupid question, but I think my 318 runs coil packs, I'd think that does too, right?

Everything ok with those?  And whatever tells those to give spark?

Cam signal?

I don't know what the scantool situation is for a '92 BMW, but no spark and no fuel makes me think the ECM isn't seeing crank rotation, or if it's sequential injection and coil packs, it isn't seeing a cam signal.

But with no scantool, I'd be getting out a scope and some backprobes and checking cam and crank signal at the DME.

This doesn't mean "bad sensor".  Last week I had a car that lost a whole bunch of sensors because they got their power from the same fuse as the ignition coils, and one of the coils was shorted, blowing the fuse.  No power = no cam signal, or a bunch of other things.

Same, has coil packs. Pulled those off, saw the boots are gross and soggy. Plugs are rusty. Have a set of plugs and coils coming next week for it

Cam signal is one we haven't addressed. I was reading that it doesn't have a great affect if it isnt working as it should. The scantool/code reader is damn near impossible on this turd. There's the old "stomp test", where the check engine light gives a morse code type of fault codes, but that doesnt even work on this car.

Ugh.  I remember the little round plug in tool with the buttons on it, too.

Hope for scan tool was to be able to see if the computer was seeing RPM while cranking.

And some people hated OBD-II when it came out!

Yeah, cam, crank, maf. Those are the 3 major ecu inputs that can cause no start.

Copy. Haven't touched cam or MAF yet. I have known good ones on my M52 I think will work... Is the M52 MAF and cam position work on an M50?
