That's a symptom of the owners more than the machine. If you neglect the maintenance long enough, even a Volvo will let you down.
Mine are trouble free, with a collective 750K miles on three cars. The most modern, an '06, has needed only a timing belt, door lock motor and oil changes.
Update: Nix on the Passat. He was looking at KBB prices, the insurance co. of the guy that hit him looks at local prices (within 75mi.). Tried buying a late-model Accord lately? From what the agent says, he'll have pretty close to $10K in the budget. He's not an enthusiast, I'm telling him what he wants is another Accord, or a Camry.
