Here's the release from 2023: MAZDA NEWSROOM|Mazda unveils 'MAZDA ICONIC SP' compact sports car concept|NEWS RELEASES
Here's the release from 2024: MAZDA NEWSROOM|Mazda Accelerates R&D of Rotary Engines Adapted to New Era|NEWS RELEASES
That's the Iconic SP from 2023 (not to be confused with the RX-Vision from 2015).
We're never getting a new one.
That body-style speaks my language, but how many times will buyers fall for the rotary fantasy?
I would go EV before I went down the rotary road to ruin.
The Iconic SP looks cute, but it's nowhere near the RX Vision concept. If the RX-V ever made it to production I would almost certainly add one to the garage.
They do this every few years. I'll believe it when I see AT LEAST a pre-production car making the rounds in the press.
I'm still waiting for the RX-01...
I can confirm that the RX-7 will be built... at the same time as the Furai, the Element, and Hondas new line of cars with double wishbone front suspension.

The difference is that there isn't a giant pile of laws that effectively ban a rear-engined Corvette. Emissions regs basically make it impossible to build a car powered (mechanically) by a rotary engine, and (IMHO, at least) you can't have an RX-7 without a rotary engine.
I would love for there to be a new RX7/8 (9?) but I'm sure it'll be revived as an electric crossover....so please...let it rest in peace.
Put a sky active thing in it or one of the old Mazda k motors with modern emissions stuff that spin up to 7k. Call it the XR7 or something. .

Woah wait, is Chevrolet going to ditch the mid engine C8 design and make the C9 a rear engine?
The rotary is a science fair engine. Cut it in half and put it on a table and I'll give you a ribbon and a gift card to Applebee's. It's neat, but in the real world it just doesn't work.
It isn't enough to just work. It can't just be 'as good as' what's out there. To succeed you have to do what they do better and the rotary just doesn't. It's only advantage of simplicity doesn't mean squat when you've got to fully tear it down every 50k miles to replace the seals.
I've followed RX7s around the track, it's awful. The complete lack of torque, the film of oil building up on my windshield, the noise... oh God's the noise. It's like following an infernal whoopee cushion through an apex.
A lot of companies tried the wankle. Almost all of them quickly gave up on it. Meanwhile mazda is over here with three black eyes saying she can fix him... he loves me.
it's sad really.
Maybe a better chance that Honda will revive the Nissan IDX,I dig it far more then the RX7 reboots that will never happen.
Cmon Honda you need a retro rwd car in the lineup :)
Yall rotary haters know you can go buy a brand new mazda with a rotary engine today, right?
This might make it to production as a rotary hybrid with electric drive. Not sure the rotary engine would actually directly power the wheels.
As you can probably tell by my projects, I am not married to a rotary engine, but there certainly is a use case that keeps the advantages of the rotary and minimizes its weaknesses.

I noticed you were "following them on track", so, you were behind them, and they were in front of you...

For what its worth, the IDX recently made an appearance at the Tokyo 2025 Underground meet...

A friend once posted a picture of myself finishing a triple pass at Sonoma raceway. I was very proud. His caption: "Some guys just hold everyone up". Thanks, Dave.
Back on topic: count me in the group that likes rotaries, but in all honesty, a modern V6 or turbo 4 would have done wonders for both the FD RX7 and RX8.

I think Mazda said at one point they would build a 4 door sport sedan /w the i6 if they thought people would buy it but the economy of those cars isn't high enough. Hopefully they will take a page out of the NC/RX8 playbook and build the next generation sports car and roadster on the same platform one just being slightly larger than the other. It will keep development costs down and an ND /w 150~200 more horsepower and a few inches of extra wheel base would be great. That would put it in the same category as the supra, Z, mustang and could probably justify a 50k+ price tag.
