Has anybody installed junk yard seat belts from a modern car into there classic?  I'm working on a TR8 coupe that I just welded a roll bar into.  Last bar was suppose to be a harness bar.  It was suppose to double as a guide for the stock belts to go up and over. The stock belts need to pass over something higher up to place the stock shoulder harness at the proper height.  Only one problem.  Now that the roll bar is installed and the down tubes are in place, I can't get the harness bar in where I wanted it.  Had to cut it down and run it between the down tubes.  Still a great place for the aftermarket harness to mount, but now its behind where the stock belts mount.  So now I'm faced with either trying to find a set of TR7 convertible seat belts or just jumping ship and finding something else.  Seeing how stock TR7 seat belts are almost 40 years old and kind of sucked anyway...  You see where I'm going with this?  I need a set of belts that mount on the rear deck, which is about armpit height in back of me.  There needs to be a provision thats 4 to 6 inches high for the belt to go up and over to get in above the occupants shoulders.  Without the lift provision, I could always fabricate something to mount them on the bar or body.

is it that the stock belts dont fit well with the modifications, the hardware sucks, or just the standard 40yo webbing concerns?

I have no experience with this company, but there are a few out there doing similar services. https://www.safetyrestore.com/seat-belt-repair-service/11-seat-belt-webbing-replacement.html

Just google "seat belt rewebbing"

Otherwise, Moss sells some vintage type belts that are brand new and pass federal standards.  You could probably find similar on Amazon for less if you want to mount a generic type belt. This might be better if its a hardware/routing problem.

*edit, forgot to ask, do you have a set of bad original belts?

All of the above.  I have a box full of spare belts, but they are all coupe belts.  Would need a set of convertible belts.  Most of the convertible belts you come across are so sun faded that there has to be some degradation of the webbing.  So like everything else when it comes to modifying a classic, I'm looking for the easiest cheapest bestest way to check off as many boxes as possible.
