OK, so I am currently running some Nitto NT05 235/45/17 on my XR4Ti and they run a touch in certain instances.

Yes, the fenders are rolled but they still touch now and then.

So I was thinking of dropping down to the 235/40/17 thinking the shorter aspect ratio will give me a touch more room.

However, the 40 series tires are wider according to Nitto's site. What's up with that?

The 45 series is 9.29" wide and the 40 series is 9.57" wide.

Shouldn't they be the same width since they are both 235's or am I missing something ??

There are tolerance ranges published by standards organizations that allow for varying section width and diameter for a given size - when mounted on a specified rim width. Also, mounting the same tire on a different rim width will change the actual measured size.
