I've always wondered what it means about me that after I've sold a bike or car, I don't ever want the same machine again. There have been a few exceptions, but really, it's just the way I am.

I also get bored with any machine after enough time. It may take a few years, but with any of them, I reach a point where I want it to go away and I want something else. Something else may be faster, or may be slower. But it will be different.

The latest round has to do with a Yamaha V-Max. I'm happily rationalizing reasons I should go buy one (but honey, it's on my bucket list!). No inteligent reason, I just want one. Always have. Insanely fast stupid bike.

I could get a Magna for a fraction of the price of a V-Max. But, I already had a Magna. Loved it. But I got tired of it, and I don't want another. Not even a V65 particularly (I had a V45).

I think it's the same itch that has me occassionally cruising Craigslist and government auctions and such, thinking up reasons I need a boat or submarine or airplane or ultralight or diving equipment or parachutes or fire engines or tractors or or or.

Maybe it just means I'm still a kid at heart. Dunno. Though I am positive this week that I NEED a V-Max.

I used to own a Yamaha ** (it's not really important to say what model) and thought I was a "fan" of Yamaha, until the V-Max was first introduced. Even today, it strikes me as a 20th century version of a codpiece. That is, while it is functional, it really goes out of it's way to scream the owner has balls.

I know the drill... the trick is to pick something obscure that will be very hard to find... until the urge passes. This week I need a Triumph Speed 4. In flat black.

Thank gawd, I thought I was the only one who went through cars like socks AND lost money on almost every deal I ever made. I did once own a Vega that I neither made nor lost money on (in my opinion), but I did lose money on the car I traded for it, a same year Spitfire. Also once had a 914 that I neither made or lost money on, aside from the set of newer tires it needed that I bought soon after I got it.

I think I've only had 18 vehicles- way way less than 80, but I understand your problem though. I usually just ride it out until the problem goes away. Some weeks I need a Volvo 240 wagon. Some weeks I need a beater Miata. If I space to park them I'd have more cars than I do. Either buy a V-max or wait until next week and maybe you'll need something completely different.

I'm the same way. I have recurring urges, and sometimes I do want something I've had before (though usually somewhat better than what I had). I spend a week at a time obsessing over something I want.

The past few weeks the thing I want is to be out of debt though...so that has kept me a bit grounded (except for the bit about wanting to go roundy-round racing again ;)).

Yeah, my weekly urge is to pay off my credit cards. Lately, it's been getting a Jeep, though. Before that, it was a Ridgeline. I bought the Jeep so I'm stuck with it, though, lol.

Interesting! I'm the complete opposite. Grew up with a Mazda GLC, and currently collect '88 Mazda 323 GTXes, and have been eyeballing the Mazdaspeed 3 for a few years now. Had a '95 Miata for ten years, sold it, and planning on replacing it with another '95 Miata. I always want something new/different, but in the same vein of what I already have/love.

My problem is that I have the bad habit of keeping 3-4 cars at a time...

Um, hello, my name is JD and I'm an addict. I'm at a least 200 cars and I'm only 36.

Having a shop and being in the business will do that I guess. I made a list almost 8 years ago now. Need to dig it up and add some more. For the last 5 years I've averaged a car every 2 months. I just wish I had more pictures. I only have 40 here. Thats not including the 4 I currently have.

With very few exceptions I have no desire to repeat myself ( harder than it sounds! ) My current joke is I'm working through the alphabet. I sold all my Volkswagens before I moved last and now I'm stuck on Volvos. And I've wanted a Yugo forever but they're getting harder to find. Might have to skip it and move on to Acura or Audi

I can't relate, I'm the exact opposite, I've regretted selling every vehicle I ever owned...

69 olds delta 88 custom royale

79 olds delta 88

74 Galaxie 500

83 (?) Toyota Tercel

89 4x4 Suburban

79 Ford Pickup

89 Honda Civic 5-speed sedan

84 Volkswagon Scirroco

96 Z-28 6 speed

00 SVT Contour (although I am a little shaky on this one lol)

There are a few more that I've owned

Check out the list, none of the cars are necessarily desirable but I liked them all for various reasons. My latest regret is selling my second 69 olds... I stay in touch with the guy who now has it in hopes he will sell it back...

Furthermore, Ill go one step further... I regret, if that is possible, that my parents sold their cars...

At least one Corvair

Several mid 60's cadillacs

Black, 63 Corvette convertible with a 340hp engine

Black, 76 Chrysler newport with a 440 4 barrell engine

I am the opposite.. usually I run a car (or cars) till they are just not worth fixing any more.. (or get killed in an accident) so I generally have them for 6 or more years.

Cars I have owned and driven do not number many

74 Super Beetle

76 Fiat Spider

75 Fiat Spider

88 Hyundai Excel GS (rare black on black car)

99 Hundai Tiburon

96 BMW 318ti

94 Saab 900 Turbo SE

That is it for drivers. My cars I have owned and never driven is quite a bit more

I'm thirty and the car count is over twenty now. Lost on all of them, some worse than others though.

79' Trans Am WS6 bought $1,200, put $3,800 in it, sold it for $900

82' BMW 320 is bought $1,200, put $4,300 in it, sold it for $800

The second gen T/A's are the only cars I've had more than one of and would have another if I could afford it. I absolutely loved the 96 Impala SS and regret selling that one more than any of them, but do not want another. I would like to have another go at the 320 is and found a nice one in P.A. but I have got to pay off my car before I get to play anymore. And once I get this one paid off I will never go in debt for another car again.

(Maybe for the wife but not for me)

I'm 35.. er, wait, maybe I'm 34... Anyway, I've had over a hundred cars now, but with a few repeats, mostly different versions of a car.

For instance, I had a Fox Mustang, then two SN95 Cobras.

E30 M3 to E46 M3...

I had an NA Miata, went to an NB Miata, and then back to an NA.

I had a 928S then got a 928S4 (the only car I regret selling - I miss it all the time).

The only cars I've ever had 3+ of are: Miata, Mustang, Buick Roadmaster (what can I say, I just love them), RX7

I am usually in the money on most of these, since I specialize in 3-figure cars. It's usually hard to lose when picking up a $1500+ car that needs some love for $500. My problem is that even if I buy a car just to flip it, I usually develop a strong crush on it and start planning out a modification/track plan for it. They don't usually go the way I plan, but it's all part of the fun.

I have a four car garage, and I always have extra cars in the driveway. I am down to 6 in total right now. 100% true: My nosey neighbors once had the sheriff inquire as to whether I was a polygamist because I had so many cars at my house all the time.

This week I have been thinking of selling the Roadmaster and buying an XJ6 or STS. By next week maybe I'll be buying shocks for the Roadmaster. You never really know day to day with me what I am really lusting after.

I typically do an even-money sale on a car every two or three months. I ended up with my Swift GT with part of the money from my giganto '77 Newport, which came from a '93 Roadmaster, which came from the money from selling some E36 wheels that I had for track use on my E36 which we (naturally) didn't have anymore.

Now I am trying to decide what to do with one of my Volvos. I do often fall into the trap of prepping a car to sell and falling back in love with it. I polished up my 745 and it is, in a word, gorgeous. This week, I am in Keep It mode.

Ok. Just to point out the obvious here- A Vega, a Spitfire and a 914- and those are the cars you've owned that were desirable enough NOT to lose money on? What were the bad ones?

I have the same issue, once the car works the way it should I get bored with it pretty quickly. I bought my camaro to enjoy V8 power again and now that it runs correctly, the windows work, and the stereo works I am bored with the thing. Its only been in my possession for about six months.

Now I want a small car that handles well with a small engine that likes to rev, which brings me back to OBD1 imports for the most part.

The only model I've owned twice was the NA miata but the second one was purchased to flip and worked out beautifully.

I've repeated numerous cars numerous times. though in the last 7 years or so I have only lost money on a few cars. most have broken even or better, brake even cars usually lose their stereos to me. If I had the money and space I would probably have a full size truck, and another 3rd gen or older f-body.
For now I make due with a minivan and a RWD 4cyl import. Both could be sold for a profit right now.
I due think my loss column is going to go up 1 car soon though. dam intrepid.

I've never owned the same car twice. The only ones I think I might buy another of are the MK3 Supras and the Volvo 240. The Supra had so much potential, it was so comfy and I think they look badass. The Volvo was my first car.

Others: 74 International Pickup (hated it) 98 Escort ZX2 92 Ford F-150 (hated it) 90 Eagle Talon AWD 88 Honda Civic Sedan 84 Nissan 300ZX

I'm another one of those guys who only picks my faves to actually buy, and just hopes my fellow "gearhead" buddies will give me a chance to drive stuff I'm curious about. That worked out really well when I was an SCCA track worker..since racing is an "equal opportunity" addiction, there were rich guys working as Corner Workers & Starters. I've driven a bunch of Corvettes, dang near every generation of Miata, a lot of the "modern" things like DSMs, Nissan S13s, RX-7s (including an FD!) and a long list of the vintage stuff I was so stoked about as a kid (Corvair, original Datsun Z &510, a bunch of British stuff, etc.)

Only stuff I look to buy these days is the ones I have/had. The Alfa's an exception..I brought it home like my friends with dogs bring home a "rescue".

EDIT: Hate to admit it in front of y'all, but I shoulda just found an NA chassis Miata for what I paid for the GTV-6. Weird thing..I was actually looking for a 2nd Gen Honda Prelude (I used to own an `83) when I stumbled across the ad for the beast.

Once you drive it, you may change your mind. I have driven a miata, and while it would be a better autocross car, for a street car after driving a milano for years, Im not impressed with the miata. It doesnt handle any better, and its small enough to be pretty useless for anything but one person under 6 feet tall, or 2 people if you dont have to take anything with you.

Eh. I'm 40 and have had over 200 cars. Every car I bought for a reason - and if that reason popped up again, I'd buy it again.

And luckily, I've either made money or broken even on most of them. Buying an XR4ti new, and selling it five years later was my worst hickey.
