I have a 2012 Frontier with an intermittent ABS problem I would like some help diagnosing. I did a little homework and found out that once I have an issue with the stability system I am no longer able to engage 4wd which could become a problem now that winter is upon us. Usually, I can cause the problem with a long higher speed right hand turn, like a highway onramp. A key cycle usually clears the issue and all is back to normal. Unfortunately I'm not able to read the code with my basic ELM27 bluetooth scanner. Is there another way to interface with the ABS system in my truck? It might be common with other Nissans of the period or as old as 05' since these trucks haven't changed in years. Also, how much is a code reader that goes beyond just the ECM? Is it worth picking one up now that every new car on the road is a rolling CAN network?
Any slack in the wheel bearing? The long right turn suggests the tone ring on the axle is moving too far away from the sensor to read properly.
An abs compatible scan tool is probably going to get you into something reasonably expensive. I see nothing about being able to flash abs codes, either, in a vehicle that new.
I had a shop replace my DS rear axle seal and in the process they broke the ABS sensor at that wheel. When I repaired it, things were OK. Im curious if I've lost another $150 magnet.
All the parts store do free code reading. I have found that only the O'Reillys store in my town has a reader that does ABS also.

I picked up a code reader from Amazon.ca for $100 CAD that will pull codes from ABS, SRS and the ECU. Anything else I looked at was north of $400.

@nitroracer.
Unfortunately you will have to take it to the dealership and have them use a Consult II or III+ (Nissan specific tool)
I do not know of a code reader that will pull abs codes from older Nissan's.
I'm not sure if the snap-on scanner will read it?
Most likely it's a wheel speed sensor
My 2008 Pathfinder showed an ABS code that the dealer confirmed was the left front wheel bearing... as Streetwiseguy suggests there was just enough play in the bearing to throw an ABS fault.

I'm chuckling at the concept that a 2012 is described as "older". That makes my newest vehicle, a 2003 Golf, pre-historic.
