Back in the early '90s, I remember reading a collection of short stories, from Sci-Fi writers, and one was titled "for the duration" might have been written in early '70s, but not sure. Definitely do not remember the author... but the collective knowledge base here is absolutely incredible, so :

The hero in the story is a scholar, who gets involved in a overthrow of the oppressive dictatorship be of a nation in a dystopian future. The current leader had overthrown the previous dictator, many years prior, but turns out to be even worse. His inner circle all have cushy jobs, getting rich, when everyone els is starving. The battle is won, but he finds out that the people's champion is going to maintain complete control, since the public can't handle taking care of themselves. And of course, his inner circle, will all be taken care of. But it's only "for the duration".
A close friend of mine really needs to read this, and I haven't been able to find it online.

I checked, I don't have that one, but I did find a reference to it.

It was written by Poul Anderson in 1957 and included in a collection of his short stories called "Strangers from Earth" (1961).  Hope you can find a copy.
