I pulled the exhaust manifold off of my eclipse gsx the other day and I'm seeing some oil in one of the exhaust ports. The car smoked a bit during hard acceleration, kind of a dark gray color. I was thinking something in the valvetrain, maybe a burnt valve or worn out guides. Well the other day I asking a buddy what he thought and he suggested that the rings in that cylinder are not sealing up. Any guesses?
If its coming out the exhaust, its sure could be rings. One bad exhaust valve seal could do it too. If you can get a boroscope down the plug hole, or even just get enough light (solder a couple wires on a 194 bulb and feed it down the hole)that you can see the piston clearly, look for a clean washed area around the perimeter of the piston. Thats a bad oil ring.
A leak down test would be of help. Seperates rings from valve seals. Of course it won't check the oil ring.
How many miles? Has the engine seen any 'spirited' driving lately? Broken rings or collapsed pistons can cause some oil loss, especially if it's just out of the blue. Is it possible it's been smoking a while and you've just missed it?

It's got a 100k or so. It hasn't seen any driving in about 4 years, but before I parked it got flogged on a regular basis. Been collecting an impressive amount of dust in my garage though.

Can I get away with doing a leakdown without bolting the manifold and turbo back up? I've never done one before but I know I can get my hands on a tester.

No way, Bill Clinton says we should just blow it up. He knows more about plugging holes than most, so I will go with his recommendation on this.

absolutely, you're just going to have to listen / feel the exhaust port on the cyl you're testing, just read up on some various methods to do it (some say to squirt some oil down your plug hole to help seal when cold, especially on a well worn engine, some say don't like on a fresh rebuild, I don't know the state of your engine so that's why I say readup)...
