Two actually. I've got a quart of Crown Tru-Strip paint stripper that I plan on using on a motorcycle tank. My problem is after tripping the paint. I want to leave the metal bare so I can clear coat it. The directions say to allow complete drying before paint. I also live in a humid area. I know I could sand off any flash rust, but that will change the appearance of the metal and I wish to avoid that.

The second question is for the side pods. I believe they are ABS plastic. They have been repainted at least once beyond the factory paint. What is the easiest way to strip the paint? I know I could sand it, but the finer grits will take quite a while and crater paper will gouge the plastic for sure. Any quite solutions, or just bite the bullet and start sanding?

You have to leave 1 sq in. Of stripper unpainted otherwise you will have a different kind of problem.

I can't help with #1, but for #2 - can you do a test section on the plastic? I've used "aircraft stripper" aerosol on some plastic parts before without incident.

Not really sure what your problems are? Paint the stripper onto the tank, let the paint bubble up and scrap it off with a plastic squeegee. Repeat as necessary then wipe the tank down with acetone or lacquer thinner. Wash thoroughly with soapy water and dry with a hair dryer. Paint with clear and done !

You can't put anything on ABS plastic that would soften the paint as it would soften the plastic as well. Give the pods couple or three coats of high build primer and sand that smooth. Use a little filler or spot putty sparingly and repeat. With enough primer filler, they ought to come smooth without ever having to hit the bottom plastic layer. Paint when they look good to you.

What I was worried about was if I followed the directions, I'd let the tank dry before continuing to paint. As humid as it is here, there would be flash rust. It seemed weird to me as well, as I'd prep the metal before paint, anyway, so why should I let it dry?

I should have reworded the post to say, "This is what I'm doing, Am I doing it right?"

You could get a bottle of N2 and a large tub with a lid from the dollar store. put tank in tub with hose from the bottle or just put bottle in tub with tank with valve just cracked so it bleeds out the dry N2 slowly put lid on it will dry the tank and displace the o2 thus no rust.

Took me hours to figure it out but when I did...

I got it right away. I was about to tell nocones to take it to the GGA thread.

Not if you don't serve alcohol.
