I second this 2010 Mazda 3. I have this same exact car. If you go this route (2010 Mazda 3) leave plenty of budget for suspension. Stock its HORRIBLE! Some cars like the Focus ST im sure you could get away with stock for a bit. If you do find a Mazda 3, drive it for a bit, wheel bearings are an issue in the front. Im hoping I can get mine changed (drivers side...again) before the 9 hour drive to Daytona. I have 90k on it. Good luck, have fun
Re your question, I ended up with a... 2005 Camry. :/
A friend was literally giving it away so... too good a deal to pass up.
Another great option someone else mentioned was the Matrix XRS. The only one I haven’t driven though. The gearbox is strange, I know that from sitting in one.
Id go for the newest nicest 3 you can find, although the 2.5 has a nice bump in torque and might actually be lighter than the 1st gen car, but it’s probably not worth holding out for over the earlier car unless you want more tech gadgets like Bluetooth.
A Yaris is a good option too.
You could also find a really nice Escort Zx-2 in that range.

You should be able to find the nicest Escort ZX2 in existence, at that price.
Possibly two of the nicest.
FUN fact.. by just attempting to ... i learned you can embed a book of faces marketplace ad in GRM.
I FOUND a $5k Civic si sedan UNDER your budget. Go talk to banks about car loans and personal loans.
this is the kind of deal you're looking for!
plus more money on top for when stuff breaks.
In reply to spacecadet :
Upside to banking at a local credit union: they have great interest rates.
Downside: They are closed for all state holidays so I can't pull a loan until Tuesday.......
Civic looks good though.

If the Civic is still available you can not really do better than that within your budget.

3 years older and twice the miles of the Koup. About what I'd expect
This is perhaps the most GRM thread ever. 3 pages of discussion of various Toyotas, Hondas, Fords and, perhaps only to appease Bobzilla, even a bit of "the crooked H" (or is that an "N", cuz' it looks like an "N" to me).
In the end, after exhausting all other options, a Miata is purchased. Life may eventually force you to sell it, but you'll never regret buying/owning it. Great choice. This summer is going to be fun.

Hahaha,
Well long story short, I couldn't find anything in my price range/market that would pass as fun. This popped up locally for cheap and I couldn't pass it up. I am going to buy a E36 M3ty truck down the road though. And Bobzilla is on to something with the Kia products. If I had found one down here with a manual I would have gone that route. Was able to get the Miata for 3400$ but, it is not perfect. It's close though and I have more than enough room in the budget to bring up to par.
In reply to Benjamin_Casto :
Oh crap, you're right. Bobzilla is a Kia guy. Hope he doesn't take it as a personal insult that I associated him with "that other Korean brand."

I don't think that'll be a problem. He's prepping a Tiburon for OneLap this year, after having taken it to GRM $2k Challenge:

You can, but the text box autoreplaces things:

many of us, having posted/read the forum for years type it in automatically. ymmv.
relatedly, you might consider reading the forum rules first post, if you haven't already:
which isn't like a warning, or anything. glad your here, look forward to following along on the NB and/or E36 M3 truck, or maybe just an E36 truck...
The truck answer is gmt400.
I recommend extended cab longbed, v8, auto. Dropped 4/6 with Firestone ride right bags.

Ain't no insult unless you call me a honda guy. I started with the crooked H's and slipped over to Kia because the price was right on basically the same thing. I did the math and we've put well over 500k miles on korean cars in the last 17 years. Total miles on those cars were closing in on 800k miles. Yeah, I put faith in those two brands.
In reply to sleepyhead the buffalo :
Lol I'm not doing an M3 truck, that was the auto replace. Crappy truck. I now need a cheap crappy truck.
