I just bought another 89 prelude. This one has the 4ws. It's a midwest car so it has had it's exposure to road salt, but runs good http://milwaukee.craigslist.org/cto/4208077404.html

my regular steer 89 I bought rust free near Nashville back in 2000. It is in good shape.
nice. what's the weight penalty like with the 4WS vs. standard? I didn't realize it was available on that body style, thought it was on the next generation. Cool.
Cool. Is the 4WS system on those totally mechanical? Or does it switch from "tight-turn mode" to "crab mode" at a certain speed like the MX6/626 system?
In reply to JamesMcD: mechanical planetary gear system it "crabs" as you begin to turn the wheel and then moves opposite as you approach full lock.
It was the fastest car through some magazine's slalom course when it was introduced. Pissed the 911 guys off.
So if the you've got, say, 450 degrees of steering from straight ahead to lock in a particular direction, something like the following happens?
From 0-150, the rear wheels increasingly steer in the same direction as the fronts
From 150-300 the rear wheels move back towards pointing straight ahead, and at 300 degrees the there is no rear steer.
From 300 to 450 the rear wheels steer increasingly opposite the fronts.
Is that roughly what it does? If so, that's wild
In reply to JamesMcD:
That is indeed, roughly, what they do. It feels supppper weird when running hard, but using a blind test when they came out, all the testers were faster in the 4ws even though they thought their runs were slower. Don't remember what article that was.
Tossing an h22 is the big swap, with an 88-89 you should have the b20a5, which likes boost. 90-91 have the b21a1 w/ the FRM sleeves that feel much torquier (really! they do!), but burn oil late in life. (Bastard B series, they share nothing with the b16/b18 etc, in fact, they share nothing with any of their brethren, it used to be popular to swap into CRX/Civics). I'm pretty sure integra b series LSD fit in the transmission, it's documented on the site.
90-91's have clear corners on the rear and different front bumpers, 88-89 had the amber rears, and wrap around turn signals on the front. Mine was a 91 w/ an 89 front bumper.
I miss my 91 4ws badly. Should have never gotten rid of it. Seriously the easiest car to parallel park EVAAAAA.
Good sites:

I'd like to add ClassicPrelude.com to the list of sites. It's a part of the 3geez.com family of sites.
Full disclosure: I'm a moderator there. Another mod over there races an 89 Accord coupe in Chumpcar. Good people over there.
Nice I thought those were really cool when they came out...mind you I was a little kid and I was like "Oooooh it steers with the rear wheels too!"
My sole experience w/ these was riding in the back seat of a co-workers car on the way to work and I happened to glance up to see how fast we were going. When i see the needle moving past the 90mph mark and we're in a 45mph zone w/ traffic it was one of the few moments that Ive been truly scared in a vehicle.
Thats said, its on my list of cars to own one day.
Good find......
