Hi Folks,
I want to make a trans adapter plate to run a standard trans on my e34 v8, but have never seen a real-life application of an adpater plate.
When you make a plate, do you have to machine down the bell housing to account for the additional thickness created by the adapter plate? Or what?
Thank you so much in advance

I don't know... I was just checking out the Kennedy Engineering site to see if I could find some sort of pics or an answer in the FAQ, but no dice so far...
I wonder if it's as simple as needing to use a trans whose input shaft is long relative to the engine's crank location and bellhousing mating face in order to make up the depth, or using a custom pilot bearing that has some extension...
I would have made a poll but there are way too many car sports for me to list down accurately.
But what I mean by sport is say.. Nascar, Rally, Formula 1, Drift.
My personal favorite is rally, watching how fast the drivers are going on dirt/snow/mud and sliding through the turns are so exhilarating.

The two adapter i've purcased came with spacer plates for the flywheel / flex plates. The one for a manual trans came with a adpater stub that fit in the OEM crank hole and had a second bore on the other end with a bushing for the trans. Think that one was a WilGap unit but its been 20+ years it was for a 392 hemi to a chevy trans.

i know in chevy apps like using an old school trans on an ls engine they make a deep pilot bushing that sticks out of the crank to take up the space

The only adapter plate I've dealt with didn't involve shaving down the bellhousing. There are more fasteners, some all-the-way through bolts and some that locate the plate to the block and some that locate the trans to the plate. in my case there weren't no steenkin pilotbearing to worry about so ymWv...
