I know a lot of people on here have used plasti dip. I have not. If you have I want your opinion. What I want to is use it to put black on the lower portion of the truck. So I would need mask the upper portion like any two tone paint job. My concern is that since the plasti dip was made to be peeled off that when I remove the masking tape it will try to take the plasti dip with it, leaving me with an ugly, boogered up line instead of a nice clean line. Am I right or wrong?

Wrong. Did it with painters tape on the hood of my old p5. Pulled tape while the dip was tacky.

However, dont do it. This E36 M3 is impossible to remove easily. In every case i have had to resort to chemical removal 9f the plastidip.

I did it over a cheap replacement chrome bumper 2-3 years ago and I've been very happy with. Beware though, that overspray goes much farther than you would expect. Mask accordingly.

Used it on my wheels, over a year ago, have peeled it in two stages, it's been very easy.  They say to be sure to do AT LEAST 4-5 coats, or it will be impossible to get off - I did I think 5 coats, and it's been easy to peel.

I will second the overspray comment.

Look up the DipYourCar channel on youtube. He has some really good videos showing how to do the masking and when to pull the tape etc.. They are worth watching if your interested in trying it.

The solvents in the dip make the underlayers soft enough to release the tape. You want coats. Many, many coats. 5-6 is a good start. Once you think there is enough, spray it two more times. It will look nice after 2 or 3, but don't be fooled. The people having issues with removal usually didn't spray on enough.

Did the grille 3 years ago and it has held up fine. Was easy to peel the tape and it left nice clean edges.

As mentioned, watch the videos. they are very helpful.  And make sure you use enough coats. I put 6 coats of black and one of the glossifier.

Came here to say this. The reason plastidip gets a bad rap is the people that use it don’t READ. Multiple effing layers ppl. MULTIPLE. That means more than two!

Another tech tip: if you're screwing around with changing colors, don't remove the dip, just ad the new color right on top of the old one. When I finally peeled the dip off the Murdercycle's tank and side covers, they came off in one or two huge sheets. Because I had over 30 layers on.

I'm seconding the DipYourCar YouTube videos. Fonzie has videos that address just about my question you'd ask, and it's all well produced.

Same for many, many coats.

If I were in your shoes, I'd think about finishing with glossifier, since I don't think black dip has a nice finish. Either that, or I've seen a lot of bad dip jobs on cheesy factory wheels.

Yep, 6-8 coats, minimum. Also, dip will not easily come off rubber seals or primer/bondo/pourous surfaces. You want to peel it off? Apply it to clean, shiny paint and mask everything else.

STOP THE THREAD NOW... so that we can all compliment Hal's subaru.  Nice Subaru!!!!! Ok back to plasti-dip. I've had good luck with it on stuff like chrome trim on the e46, and a sets of wheels. Never used it on a whole car though.

I agree with all that has been said.  Multiple coats is the way to go.  Wheels and chrome trim are all I have done, and It still looks solid.  I do need to touch up some spots on the trim where my girls have scratched it up with their rings and fingernails.

How long between coats?

In reply to Kreb :

In my case (65°, no humidity, driveway in full sun) it was minutes. I bombed 8 layers in an hour.

Yeah, if you want to mask an edge, you have to do all the layers as fast as you can without it running badly because the dip HAS to still be wet when you pull off the tape.

Now, if you have something that is a natural breaker- like a line of trim- it gets a lot easier, but if you're doing it with tape it HAS to be wet. I did this with the accursed Jeep *spits* Patriot a few years back to give it a two-tone gold & black look, and it worked well once I figured out keeping it wet and giving it lots of coats.

I can't remember if it was the directions on the can or a website ( might have even been plastidips website, it was an faq/tutorial type thing...), about 10-15 min between coats our.  Not terribly long.

Kreb, if you are doing a complete car, by the time you get back to the starting point, after the roof, hood, etc..it's probably about time for the second coat. 10-15 minutes. And so on.

You'll need to log in to post.
