So I have the chance to pick up a 70ish 914 for a price I can afford. It would be a challenge car and street car. No title and appears pretty rusty. Im really not sure that it is salvageable. It would depend upon how much structural rot I find.
Anyway, im concerned about wether or not ill be able to brakeeeven by parting it out if its too bad to save.
Car supposedly has a stuck motor, but I haven't verified. Has a set of Riviera mags and air conditioning. Seems to be prettyccomplete.
What would the part out value realistically be in the worst case scenario? This would be assuming no salvageable interior or sheetmetal.
My automotive lust and add has kicked in hard on this one. It's been parked under pine trees for at least five years that I know of. Can see almost all the ground under it. All four tires flat, and the rear engine cover has been up. No way to get under it for a decent inspection. Three hours each way from me, so if I decide to buy im pretty much stuck.
I know this is a bad place to be asking to get talked out of something, so im asking about worst case scenario.
Would NOT be a resto.
rusty 914s will just break in half. If really rusty most of the suspension parts and other items will not be salvageable. If the motor is stuck it cost lots of money to build correctly.
But, they handle incredible when setup right. And there are a many options for engine swaps. Have fun.
Ask for a picture with both doors open and the roof off. If it doesn't fold in half, it's probably salvageable. Given the conditions you described, my money is on folding in half.
Parting out 914s CAN be profitable.
From what you're telling us, that's a couple hundred dollar car, tops. Assuming the transmission is still in decent shape, that's what you're buying.
Car is 300. Forgot to mention that. Plus cost to get it out from under the trees and home. So probably 500 total.

I like Riviera wheels, but they don't generally age well. On a rusty car, they're probably pretty corroded too.
If it's a 73-74 2.0, it might be worth picking up. Of course, there's always the chance that someone swapped the original engine for a six...
Do you know if the car is carbureted or fuel injected?
You could go to thesamba.com and look at 914 parts, do a little math in your head and see if it's worth the trouble. 914World has good information, but they're mostly left coasters where values may be different than in our neighborhood.

I've been looking for a 914 for my little project and can't seem to find one anywhere close. If you're close enough to me (WV), I'd buy you out if you get it and it breaks in half. If fact, you can even keep the front half. The poor condition is ideal for my needs.

That should be the new subtitle of the magazine.
Im just outside Charlotte nc.
What all would you need? If its just drivetrain, I definatly wouldn't be using that no matter what.
Ive scheduled next Saturday to getaanother good look at it.
If you're serious about buying it out, pm me. I've got first dibs on it according to the owner, but really don't need another flaming pile of crap on my property right now.
Hell, call me at 8282601254.
Michael.
I'm a couple hours north of you in Charleston WV and I am serious if it has what I need, but it sounds like it might not. I need a 914: complete, running engine, gearbox, shifting bits, axles, hubs, spindles, brakes, steering stuff, gauges maybe, wheels, and the title.
No title and it does not run. Other than that it has everything you need.

I have parted out quite a few over the years. Advice above is rig on. Not much value based on description. At $500 all in you won't lose anything that is for sure. Not a hug money maker either. I would get it if it doe
Esn'nt fit your needs part or flip it to someone else that can use it instead of just letting it return to the earth.

One of the owners previous attempts to sell. Take a look and please tell me its not salvageable. ..
I've seen worse. Might get something for the A/C. You'll never really know about the body until those plastic rockers are off and you see what is(n't) underneath.
