Hey all, long time lurker here but first time posting. A recent problem has prompted me to make an account.

My long distance girl friend lost power steering on her car tonight. She was getting on the freeway when a friend in the passenger seat bumped the shifter (its an auto) into neutral. I guess when she went back into drive she lost power steering. The car is an 06 Elantra with ~100k on it. She has a several hundred mile journey tomorrow and needs to know if the car will make it. Im pretty handy and could probably tackle it myself but I wont be able to touch the car until next week. So the question, what happened and is the car safe to drive? Im thinking as long as its not over heating (serp belt is still intact) it should be ok. Taking it to a shop wouldnt be ideal (cost and all) but being stranded on the side of a major highway would be bad too. Thoughts?

I would not go on a road trip with a car that has an undiagnosed issue.

Could have spit the belt off. If it only runs the power steering pump, thats not too big a deal. What matters is if it runs an alternator or waterpump.

If it popped a hose, by the time she gets to you the pump will be melted.

just a wild guess, but i've seen the relief valve on the pump stick open, usually after an over rev situation.
