We used veggie oil in our truck when we went to TX last year. We had barrels in the bed with a bed cover/camper over it all. We tried to gravity transfer, but that took a long time. So, I bought a rotary pump trying to keep our monetary output down http://www.amazon.com/TERAPUMP-ROTARY-HAND-MANUAL-BARREL/dp/B0026JG7EQ/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1351942456&sr=8-3&keywords=rotary+barrel+pump To make this work faster, I used a piece of pipe, with a lock bolt on it to fit onto the piece where the handle fit on and had another bolt that stuck out for a drill to fit on. This allowed for the drill to be the power on the pump.

This would pump faster than you could use to fill a tank on a vehicle, so moving into a open tank as you speak it would only take a few minutes.

Thinkkker has it. Trust me, listen to the veggie oil people. We do nothing but move oil all day long. I can pull 12 gallons of crappy veggie oil at 10*F in 2 minutes with no moving parts (vacuumed tank). If this is a one time thing, you have a lot of options. If this is going to be a regular thing, you want to make it easy and reliable.

I like this solution. In your experience, does the drill seem like it has to work very hard ? And by that I mean, does it seem like you would go through a few drills now and then, or does the whole system seem to be pretty reliable and efficient ? (relative to the cheapness)

The drill doesnt work hard at all. We went 1600 miles, stopping every 350-400 to refill on the truck, still using the same battery till the last stop. Its a old 19.2 volt craftsman.

The thing to watch, is to make the piece close to square when you weld it up if you weld it, I got it off a little so that was the only issue, but it still worked just fine.

Just to bring closure to this thread, this is what my friend ended up using (I just saw him post a picture of it today):

He said it's a "Graco Quiet Fire Ball Air Powered Pump"

Trouble with grayco or double diaphams is noise.

We use theses to pump hydrolic oil out of drum and another for used out of the sumps. 2 12ft garden hoses one cut in half with 4ft of 1/2 inch conduit hose clamped for the "probe" end.

We have a waste oil heater at work, and we use these tubs.
They have a pretty large opening on top, so it's easy to dump the oil from pretty much any container. When we need to fill the heater, we just pick it up with a forklift and it's got a ball valve drain with a 90* on it so you can just pour it right in.
