I locked myself out of an '88 325.
If I can pull the interior door handle with a long rod, will the door lock plunger come up by itself, or do I need to find a way to pull the plunger up first?

From what I remember from my 88 325is, pulling the handle would unlock it, unless when you locked it from the outside you did the double lock, which makes it impossible to open from the inside.
Do you have a handsaw handy?
I used to be able to unlock my 86 RX-7 with a saw. (stay with me here, not joking)
I would run the blade (teeth pointed aft) between the seal and the window like you would a slim-jim Being very careful of the seal mind you. And when it hit something solid I would push DOWN (not UP like in the movies). With a light amount of force you should see the lock plunger move if you're touching the right thing with the saw. If not keep looking, sometimes it takes a try or two.
Good luck YMMV
IIRC, you have to unlock the door before pulling the handle.
Really, though, it's just a miracle that your interior door handles haven't broken by this point.
Are you in a hurry? I can look it up in the book when I go back to work on Sunday morning and tell you how to open it.
