We have all seen race cars crash. Comes with the territory. MOST of the time, the driver walks away, sort of. I was wondering, how would a well built racer do in a government crash test? Seems like they should do well, but...

I can tell you that my 2nd gen RX7 just survived a 100mph crash at NJMP with sheet metal and suspension damage only. The main structure of the car was not affected. The hit was left front, full side and left rear into the barrier coming on to the front straight. And yes, I walked away! The only real injury is to my wallet. I am repairing the car to run at the SCCA Runoffs in September.

Years ago I read that they ran a NASCAR vehicle into the standard crash barrier and there was so little damage it could be driven away, but the severe deceleration would have killed the driver. In the 1980s as I recall.

the new NASCAR cars have crumple zones in the front and rear, but the main part of the car is almost indestructible when subjected to anything that will happen at the track.

Is the test dummy wearing the 6-point harness, helmet, and HANS device, or is he using a street 3-point belt?

Came here to write this.

I know it's got nothing to do with CAR survival in a crash but it's a very good point. And really, I care more about the driver(s).
