It always seems that the coupe is considered more appropriate for racing, but the drop top is just so much fun for everything else. Can we start a collection of convertibles with racing heritage?

I'm thinking convertibles, not race cars designed without tops.

I'm a huge fan of vintage roadster racers:

So many rules. And it was the rules that forced the first cars I linked to be open.

Thing is, coupes are stiffer and more aerodynamic. So the softtop version is a step down. One of the most raced cars in the world was designed as a convertible but is almost always raced as a coupe.
And, well, there's this.

This is how the Cobra looks as a replica.

But how did they race?

Of course, if you cut off enough of the body, you can make up for the loss in slipperiness with small frontal area. Even then, I suspect it's rule-driven in this case as well.

I just wanted some inspiration for fun street cars that are convertible. I like the Miata's size, weight, etc, but being to remove the top is really what makes me happy. I can drive the car slow and not really care.

In this country maybe, but not elsewhere.

I've wanted one of these since reading The Unfair Advantage.
