It's not the aluminum Grumman body that I'd like to build
But it may have to do. I may attempt to get eyes on it this week then let the terrible ideas begin regarding drivetrain.

A friend of mine had one of those jeeps for years. I've driven farm machinery that was faster and better handling.

As long as it has mountains of suspension travel and 16.5" wheels that sounds perfect
My Godfather drove a civilian version of one of those for a number of years back in the late 70s IIRC.

My friend has 4.88's and Detroit Lockers in his CJ8.
Even with 38" Swampers, the 360 feels quick!
I think they came with 3.73 and a Trac-lok. You'd need a different carrier with much lower gears (I think).
A free jeep is a free jeep. Go get it. Figure out what to do with it later. There is no wrong answer when it comes to build options.
Have you seen the asking prices of nicer ones? $4,000-$5,000.
If I knew that when they were selling for 10% of that...
Hell, nice CJ's are $10,000-$20,000 now

No idea. I mean is not the vehicle as a collection of awesome hardware.
It's got to be 85% nostalgia and 15% potential.
The best trail Jeeps have an LS, Dana 60's, Atlas transfer case and fiberglass bodyparts.
I love Jeeps. Most of my early four wheeling was in Jeeps, don't get me wrong. But as a vehicle, they're nothing spectacular.
I remember driving my lifted Samurai with 33" Super Swampers and many other things and a guy driving a built CJ7 yelled "Buy a REAL Jeep!"
I yelled back "why?" and off he drove.
The DJ5 was a civilian model before the post office.
A previous model, the Dj 3A was the predecessor.
Came in a hard top similar to the PO model and a convertible
I drove one of those every day for a few years. They are very tough but keep the driver door shut cause they do like to roll over like a cheap hooker!
