Trying to clean up the underhood of the Firebird. It has a thin, waxy coating all over the place, sort of yellowish not the heavy black stuff. With lots of brake clean an scrubbing it slowly comes off, and better ideas?

I used Kerosene and a pressure washer. Paint it several times a day with kerosene to soften, pressure washer to take it off. Gas on a rag for the really tough spots.

This has worked for me. Spray cans of engine cleaner work as well as it's mostly kerosene anyway. Other solvents will work too, their just more flammable.
Maybe try pure mineral spirits in your paint gun to soften it, then pressure wash.
If that fails, make a Family Dollar run for cheapo oven cleaner. It will work but say goodbye to the paint as well.
