An in law got a quote to repair the rear airbags on his 06 Town Car at $1500 for both sides. Does this seem high or is this in the neighborhood of what it would cost?

I am not sure you can get them used so that price would not surprise me. I have heard of cars getting totalled because of airbag deployment that were otherwise with very little damage.
You mean suspension? I have no clue but it would explain the one that never seems to move outside my apt building with its rear bumper sagging close to the ground. $1,500 has got to be a quarter of the price of a decent example nowadays. I do love the rear legroom in these things.

Looks like a good reference site. It took a lot of effort to shoo these off my radar given how many show up in D.C.s impound lot now they're back on. Thanks!
The bags are $50-$100 on rock auto and go where the springs normally would, I've never had the rear suspension apart on a Crown Vic but I'm not seeing where $1500 is coming from. Or you can probably covert it to coil springs for ~$100 in parts and the same labor if the system has a lot of issues.
Yep, sounds a little pricey. Lines and compressor could be toast, but $1500 should replace everything. I'd say do the coil kit, and keep driving.

+1, just read up on it. airbag module is 200 bucks. sensor a couple hundred, etc, etc. Spring kit kills the problem dead for 120 bucks
What typically happens is the bags spring a leak, then the pump runs constantly trying to get the suspension up to normal height until it poops the bed. So it typically takes both bags and a compressor. $1500 isnt far off for a shop. I agree that a coil spring convo is the way to go.
$62 conversion kit with variable rate springs. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Rear-Air-Spring-Suspension-to-Coil-Spring-Conversion-Kit-for-Crown-Vic-Town-Car-/311699454134?fits=Year%3A2006%7CModel%3ATown+Car&hash=item4892bc38b6:g:c2MAAOSwhdRYWkKP&vxp=mtr
Might as well throw a decent pair of shocks on while you're in there, you'll have the old ones halfway out.
