And let us not forget the various mechanics and designers that helped make the name Shelby what it is today.

Ole Shel knew how to make money better than just about anybody. He truly was an automotive legend.

Can you imagine the cost of Shelby products now? They were mostly untouchable before when he was alive.

I have a friend that owns a genuine cobra, supposedly it was used as a test mule at the LAX factory (the first 289ci engine IIRC). I'll bet its value just doubled.

Not too many people have left a bigger mark on the automotive world than Shel. I don't agree with all of his business practices, but he built a hell of a lot of great cars. He made things happen that not a lot of other people could have, and for that he'll be missed.

He lived a full life, from Chicken farming, Safari guide in Africa to world famous race car driver and car manufacturer.

Can you say you've lived a full life? if not, why not?

Automobile Magazine once had Shelby telling the story of how he was at the Detroit Auto Show one year (quoted from memory): "So I'm up on the platform and there's this pretty girl trying to take my picture, and she's moving all around, trying all sorts of different angles, and finally she says, 'Mr. Shelby, you might want to do up your fly,' and I said, 'Gawd damn that Iacocca for puttin' me in this Eye-talian suit!' "

You guys are being very nice. I'd say that his actions in the last couple of decades damn near overshadowed the ones that made him the legend that he is.

Totally serious question here: How much of the Shelby magic was Carroll himself and how much was the people he had working for him?

I (maybe incorrectly) feel that he was more Paul Sr. and less Jesse James if you understand what I mean by that.
