So unfortunately Robert Wickens sent out the following tweetagram. It sounds like he's a paraplegic although apparently he hasn't given up all hope, some small movements below the waste. Glad to see Sam Schmidt in the background of the pic. One person who literally does know what he's going through.
The lack of information earlier was all the confirmation I needed. I really hate that I was right.
I hate that they race those cars on big ovals. I have hated it for many years.
In reply to Streetwiseguy :
While it could easily happen at Indy, I'd be happy to see them drop all superspeedways except Indy. That wont happen. There's a core of fans who think Indy should be all ovals non of that Euro style sissy street and road tracks. At the end of the day, open wheel cars have outgrown ovals and the publics willingness to accept tragedy I feel.
Hopefully he’s as upbeat as he appears to be. That’ll go a looong way toward his recovery and his future. God knows I’d have a hard time being as positive as his post makes him seem.
It's sadder when you realize most of the driver have zero health insurance. Hinchcliffe wrote an interesting opinion pieced about it. https://racer.com/2018/09/25/hinchcliffe-indycar-drivers-need-a-stronger-voice/

What a tragedy. All for a race with what, 5,000 fans?

He's right there with Brad Baker #6 in American Flat Track. It's a risk we all take anytime we do what we love.
