This is for my co-worker. His 87 RX7 is having an issue with oil levels. When cold, oil is full. When it gets hot, oil level drops to the point of the oil pressure dummy light comes on. Any ideas?

What's the reading at the dipstick when hot? Maybe it's a bad sensor.

Oil fill and oil pressure are 2 different things.

Either his oil is too thin which gives too low a pressure OR he needs to shim his oil pump to give it more pressure

I think the dipstick reading drops when hot. I'l have to ask him more about it next time we work.

So this is probably just a dead engine with worn bearings that won't keep oil pressure when it warms up. (I killed a couple engines on my race car and they did this.)

However, in the interest of a conversation I think it's possible that you have air in the oil system somehow. The oil cooler has a check valve that opens at about 180°s (iirc). It might be possible that the oil cooler's check valve is opening and sucking the oil into it and dropping the level. The question is why it wouldn't just fill up and fix itself? Maybe the exit of it is blocked?

Probably just a dead engine though.

That is the same on all cars. Check oil when its hot and the oil hasn't made its way back into the pan and the level will be lower than when checking with a cold engine.
