Hey guys, So, I'm officially getting sick of the open diff in my 94 base model miata. And the lack of junkyard miatas here leaves the pickings slim to nil for finding an LSD rear on the cheap. So...I was reading that supposedly the 86-91 lsd's from NA RX7's are a boltin affair for the 94+ rear. So...there any way other than pulling the entire rear off the RX7/ or contacting mazda with the vin to figure out if it got an LSD or not?

It'd have to be a 5 lug car, and I'm fairly certain only then a GXL, GTUs (the s is very important) or Turbo II would have one. I've had four 5 lug FC's: Two Turbo II's, a GXL, and a GTU, and the GTU was the only one without an LSD.

Bamalama's right, only the GXL, GTUs, and Turbo II came with LSDs. The LSD's that came with the GTUs FC3S are viscous, the other two are clutch-type. If you get a clutch-type, it may be worn out and require a rebuild. IIRC, those plates are not cheap.

I also think the ring and pinion are different between the turbo and NA rear ends. Not sure what effect it has on compatability with a Miata.

They are. Currently sniffing around rx7club.com and rotarycarclub.com for the details...

Yeah, I found a few guides saying NA ones will fit on Miata.net and a few other's during my searches of the intertubes. Seem that the turbo II LSD is requires more modifications to install.

Look for GXL's then. The GTUs (assuming you ever even see one) came with a TII diff.

N/A limited Slips = 7" ring gear

86 Sport - clutch type

86-88 GXL - Clutch type

88 GTU - Clutch type

89-90 GTUs - Viscous type

All turbos came with a limited slip but 8" ring gear.

No one has considered an LSD blotter joke yet...

How cheap is "cheap"? I've got a Type II Torsen (just the diff) that I'd sell you for $250 shipped. If you want a Torsen.

If you're set on a clutch type, there's a pretty good writeup archived on Miataturbo.net on which cars have the parts you need, and which parts those are.

A 1st Gen Rx-7 LSD unit fits the 2nd Gen Rx-7 non Turbo models and therefore is also going to fit a Miata.
