Looking at an RX8 with an engine replacement under warranty. What exactly is this? New crate engine, engine rebuild, reflashed computer or just replaced bits?

generally that means they put in a remanufactured one. Mazda has a factory somewhere in america I think where they rebuild them. I hear they are hit or miss sometimes on if they seal as good as a new one.
Thanks. That's what I was concerned about. The seller was trying to make the engine change a good reason to buy. Think I'll pass and continue looking for a car that has a good documented service history. I'm used to rotaries that just run and run. It's hard to know if there is an actual issue with RX8 or not.
I guess it depends on how good the engine is that was replaced. A lot of RX8s seem to need engines, especially early ones. With an early one, a replacement engine with a new set of coils is probably a good thing.
Either way, a compression test might be a good idea.
I believe they put in a remanufactured core (short block). I'm not sure which is better; Do you get an more used engine which could expire, regardless of maintenance or a newer reman? I don't think it's fair to say one way is significantly better than another. My personal opinion is that the RX-8 engine is more reliable than a turbo RX-7, but a fair bit less reliable than a n/a RX-7. It's hard to truely know the answer.
