Yeah he was certainly less then pleased. At least he and his wife were unhurt.
He took it surprisingly well given the circumstances.
Man, that sucks. 
Hey, in the 'silver lining' department: maybe he can build the first ND powered Exocet...
Short tale: getting hit in the first mile is pretty bad, the worst I saw was a GMC pickup which got T boned by a Hyundai with a coat hanger for an antenna at the traffic light in front of the dealership. The new owner had driven it all of about 200 feet before getting clobbered.
It would be great PR for Mazda if they stepped in and secured an unclaimed LE model for the guy. That would make a pretty good commercial, Including the damage details of the first car.

It's not his department, but Dave Coleman has been emailed. The nugget about wearing the same shirt as when he picked up his NA makes the story.

That's impressive! No way I could wear a shirt from 25 years ago.

Thats awesome that Mazda is replacing it for him though! Good PR move indeed! They just went up a few notches in my book.
More and more Mazda strikes me as a company that stands up and does what's right. I remember a few years ago one of the container ships they use had a ballast problem in port and keeled over about 45 degrees. Several hundred (thousand?) Mazdas spent significant time at a very odd angle. Mazda could have passed these along to their dealer network and never looked back --many had not one single scratch. Instead they wrote them off and had an outside auditor verify that every single one was crushed. Mazda said that it could not be sure that keeping those cars at a very steep angle for weeks on end would not have adverse effects.
