Backstory: I got remarried last year to a woman who is a car enthusiast but never had a support system. In 1990 the first car she bought by herself shortly out of school was a red 84 Celica GT-S hatchback. Loved it but only had it for 6 months before it was stolen and stripped. When we got together I decided to introduce her to my hobby by searching for a replacement. I figured that she would be more accepting of the time and mess of a project car if she had an attachment to it.

I had no experience with these, so I threw myself into learning all about them, which is part of the fun of the chase for me. It took me a year and two failed attempts. After the last one, where I flew in with cash and left very disappointed I took a break from looking. After a few months, one night I was trolling Craigslist at a 1000 mile radius and found a pretty basic add. I don't know why I even bothered to call, but wow was it a find.

So now I would like to introduce my wife's new toy, most definitely not a project car:

http://s1107.photobucket.com/albums/h390/rojeho/

I bought this car from the original owner in the original town with the originally issued 1985 title. He told me the name of the salesman and how the dealership grew from a strip mall storefront to the current store. It was always a second car and always garaged. There is literally not a pinhead of rust anywhere on it or under it. The paint is all original and has never even had a touch up brush touch it. It has 171k miles on it, and you would never know it by the condition of the seat bolsters, pedal rubber pads, the lettering on the stalks etc. The shifter is as tight as new, the doors are dead straight, the wood spare tire cover is perfect. Among the odd facts of the car:

The PO told me that "it was in the rain three times. Well, maybe I forgot one or two, but definitely less than ten times." The original port installed motion alarm system still works. There is not a single blemish on any of the wheels. I had to redo the window tint because the original tint, applied in 1985, was just starting to bubble. It's never been professionally detailed, it's just this clean. When I pointed to the defog switch and asked if it worked, with a dead stare he said "I don't know, I've never had it in weather where I needed it. In fact, I don't think I've ever pushed that button." Among the original, never been changed parts include the brake pads and rotors, clutch, radiator hoses, and the original R-12 freon. The AC is not super cold, but is still more cold than cool or warm. The only parts that have been changed are the starter, water pump and clutch slave (the only time it has been in for an overnight service), and tailpipe and muffler (the only receipt that came with the car).

When I first got it, I struggled through a no-start. I changed the fuel pump and the relay. Even after that it still wouldn't start reliably, and then one day it magically healed itself and it's been perfect ever since.

Had to dig to find some cassette tapes, now we just need some parachute pants and a few props and we're ready to go cruisin, 80's style.

It has 171k miles and the timing belt has never been touched?!?

You better do that QUICK, otherwise you may ruin a good engine!

EDIT: After clicking the link I realized it's a Celica GT-S (22RE, timing chain) not a Corolla GT-S (4AG, timing belt). My mistake. Have fun with it, they are tanks!

22 R-E. Timing chain.

Odd, it worked when I first posted, but now it's not. If I copy the link into a new tab it works. Not sure what to do...

Went up one level, maybe that will help the link

Wow. That's amazing. Great find and I hope you have many years of enjoyment with it. I am talking about the new wife.

The car is really nice too.

The link works now. That's an amazing car! It looks more like 10,000 miles than 171,000.

I still have a hard time reconciling the mileage with the condition. The original owner was a meticulous engineer. I saw his house and garage and I believe the car is legit. He just drove it so gently. Based on the mileage shown on the Midas receipt (my only document) the mileage was 10k per year for the first 10 years, then about 5k per year after. It dwindled the last couple, and as he was getting established into retirement he was starting to downsize his whole life, and felt that he had enjoyed the car to the fullest and was ready to see it go. Although he did drink quite a bit the evening that the car drove away

If I had to pick a car to represent '1985', that would probably be it. Very cool find .

The 22RE ought to run forever, too.

Awesome find. I doubt I could find one down here, much less in that great of a shape.

Man, that thing looks really great!

Head over to celica-gts.com and find the Billy M bushing for the shifter. I'm sure it needs it. Fun car, have a blast with it! Bet the fuel filter hasn't been done in a while either. It's kind of a crappy job. Right under the intake manifold. Long extensions and a 17mm socket help a lot.

Been there since I started looking a year ago. In fact, I bought the bushings before I found a car, figuring that I would need them. You wouldn't believe how tight the shifter is. It literally feels new with no play and no slop. It's one of the things that amazes me about the car.

Twenty years ago when I lived in upstate New York my neighbor had one of those and a 944. That driveway left an indelible mark on me. Your car looks to be a time warp back to those days. Good buy!

Great Score - one of my favorites.

Back in 1985 I was comparing this exact car (and color) to the Nissan 200SX. They were very similar except the 200SX had an independent rear end similar to the 300ZX. The Celica has a solid axle.

After all these years I like the looks of this Celica over the 200SX.

I always loved those cars and 85 was my favorite year for them. I remember looking at two year old used ones that were beginning to rust at the end of the hatch even back then.

That is an incredible find. I'd still love to own one of those

Somewhat strange....the starter has been replaced, but not the brake pads and rotors?

I like RWD Celicas, but have to admit I'm more partial to the square (all right, rectangular) headlight version of the 2nd gen. Celica. The only 3rd gen. Celicas in this neck of the woods are crap brown and very tired silver/grey ones.

For some reason, 2nd gen. Supras are starting to pop up on the local CLs.

I believe the GT-S has IRS, the GT/ST variants had the solid axle.

I had me one of those. Fun to drive in a skittery, snap-oversteer kind of way. Unfortunately it was the second-worst engineered POS I've ever owned.

At the OP - awesome score! That thing is severely clean. Pump-inflatable lumbar support FTMFW.

You sir are correct. I should have gotten the Celica since they came with those awesome flairs. As usual, I was buying the base, no options model and comparing them.

You betcha. Still works, still holds air and you can feel each of the three areas bleed off individually at the touch of a button.
