When I click on the "magnifying glass" icon to start a search, I don't get a test window for typing. The grey banner area expands and pushes everything else down a little, but I can't enter my search terms anywhere.
What am I doing wrong?

site:grassrootsmotorsports.com
Put that into Google before your search term. Worlds better than the search function on site.

I'm not having that issue, on Chrome on Windows 10. Search box and button appear as per normal. I can't imagine anything that you'd be doing wrong, but it's the sort of thing where you might try clearing your browser's cache, restarting the browser, and/or restarting the computer.
Totally not an answer to your question, but it does raise the point that the best way to search the site is with Google using "site:grassrootsmotorsports.com". EDIT: I was beaten to this part, but it's the truth.
Even when it works the built in search feature is about as useful as a chocolate tea pot. But these days I don't complain about it. The powers that be have made such a quantum leap forward with the ease that you can upload or link photo's it's now better than any other forum. Also most off the shelf forum software like V-bulletin dont' allow search terms of three letters or less which is a real PIA for automotive forums when you want to search things like 'BRZ', '323', 'PSI' etc. so 'XXXXXXX site:http://siteyouwanttosearch' works so much better. anyway
