Woopee another what car thread. Looking for a new daily for my brother. He cant drive stick and wants something that gets good gas mileage and is reliable but is also somewhat sporty. Budget is 2500$ or as close to that as possible. I suggested a two door civic. He likes the look of the Tiburon but i dont know if they fit that criteria. Thanks guys

But yeah, SE-R, Civic... hell, the answer overchecks the sporty box but has some obvious failings as a DD.
Thought about miatas as well. Problem is i rarely see ones with slushboxes around here.

Yeah, does he have two legs and two arms, or at least a right arm? That is pretty much all you need to drive a standard.
If he can have a two seater, Miata is your obvious answer. If not, SE-R, G20 or Protégé would be good.
Fwiw I dont see how the Tiburon wouldnt fit his criteria.
volvo 850 turbo, easy to find automatics, reliable, and with 220hp on tap its reasonably sporty
The newest Celica coupe is fairly sporty and reliable.
I would vote for an Accord LX of Late 90's Vintage. They are super reliable, seem to be kept in better shape than Civics of the same age, and are pretty small compared to other mid-sized cars. Automatics are easy to find and they are quite sporty, without actually being a sports sedan.

This. Skip the auto civic. No torque and slooooooow. Accord is your answer.
If he learns to drive stick, (it aint' rocket science) it will open up many more choices for him. He may also learn to .....gasp....enjoy driving as a bonus! 
See....it's a smart decision to learn how to drive a manual....it will save him $$.

since no manual, I say ditch the sporty for luxury and go LS400.
Because I get the feeling that the brother in question will also want space for luggage for 2 as part of the "compromise" ruling out an MR-S.
He likes accords. Drove a friendsand said thats what he wants. Now to begin the search.
If he gets an Accord, he will pay the "Honda Tax" on the purchase and the insurance, just sayin'.Brother has a Mazda 3 that has the auto that you can shift manually bumping the lever forward and back. Has been a great little car for him.

Good MPGs and sporty enough to keep him happy without the grandpa image many cars (accords, tauruses, impalas, etc) get.
Any Mazda 3 you're going to find in his price range is going to be pretty rough.

+3 On that. Civics are good and fun but are slow with lots of plastic rot. Not to mention small inside. My brother in law got a 99-03 2dr V6 Accord for the exact same reasons. Get an EX-L if you can find it. Or.. if he can stand the fugly front end an Acura CL which is a lux version Accord coupe
